I wonder if work places need a TV licence for this. They need a licence to let staff listen to the radio.

Possibly but they need to catch you first. They can't fine you anything all they can do is report you for prosecution. The fine is issued by the court and goes to the court it does not get handed over to TV Licensing.

Are you sure your workplace does not have a TV License?

Possibly. I know they don't have a license to play the radio as that was banned a couple of months back as we didn't have a "commercial radio license" which is something you apparantly need to have the radio on at work!

There must be more to this story or you are being scammed. You do not need a TV licence for a computer to watch other people's home made movies. You do not even need a TV licence to watch catch up TV online though you do need one to watch live TV online. You do not need a TV licence to watch DVDs.

For a while I did not have a TV licence or service to save money. I used the TV to watch DVDs and watched some catch up TV online. I was getting the standard threatening letters from the TV licensing authority so I rang them up and explained my situation and they stopped. Their own website explains when you do and do not need a TV licence, why don't you ring them and explain the situation?

Yes he posted again. The story is not 100% true. The form said he was using the internet to watch live TV (which is not allowed). They sent him a court date and due to his personal circumstances he decided not to go. They were therefore fined in absence. If they had turned up at court there would have been no issue.

    Its basically the OP's fault.

The OP's second post says :

"Yes I was taken to court, but on the charge sheet they send you I clearly
stated I do not watch TV, have a TV, or watch the BBC I Player, or any live
    broadcast"
    .

OP says that she replied that she does not watch Iplayer but does not say that the charge stipulated that.

I suspect that she added the Iplayer point on her reply to the court and now has escalated her position up to the position where she believes she is being fined for watching Iplayer - actually, her problem is that she didn't have a TV licence and didn't attend court to defend her case.

But my work PC is plugged into a mains outlet. I often have it on watching some sort of sport on Sky Go while I am at work. Can they fine me for this?
Probably not but your employer could more than likely sack you if you don't have their express permission to watch it.

I assume that if the OP has a stand alone DVD player and uses a TV to watch them, then he would still need a licence as a TV will have a tuner in to receive live broadcasts.

    You would assume wrongly.

Owning a device with a tuner doesn't require you to have a TV Licence, in the same way that owning a fishing rod doesn't require you to have a Fishing Licence.

if you buy a device that is related to TV viewing then they do tend to send you a "You don't have a license" letter AFAIK.

Not if you don't give them your address details. ;)
  • The BBC sales goons have strict targets to hit and some people are conned into signing forms which later get falsified by them.

Some don't even bother visiting the properties, preferring instead to just write and sign the forms themselves.
