This has been discussed many times, both here and in the Techie Stuff board. I seem to remember that you need a license to WATCH or RECORD a TV transmission AS IT IS BEING BROADCAST. (And indeed the link from visidigi confirms this). You do NOT need a license simply to USE a PC or DVD player, even if it is to watch PRE-RECORDED stuff. (In this case the link is misleading).

OP - WHO fined you? The BBC can't fine you. Were you taken to court?
Yes I was taken to court, but on the charge sheet they send you I clearly stated I do not watch TV, have a TV, or watch the BBC I Player, or any live broadcast. They wrote back and asked me to attend the court, but I couldn't because I care for my disabled son on my own and I couldn't leave him, or take him. I told them that too, but today I have a letter saying they have fined me £275 for watching TV!

Oh come on now I just pointed out how much you know and how you always show up to defend the BBC, something Joe Blogs would do.............not.

Naive, gullible people who according to figures are mostly OAPs and single parents.

Oh I know yes, its usually less than the BBC TV Licence, the BBC and it's PR people hate me ;)

If you take the time to read the thread you'll see a BBC TV Licence is only required to watch "live" feeds

No they pay Capita hundreds of millions to threaten, intimidate and harass the British public which is why they wont do it directly. The fact reminds the BBC remains overall in charge as I've shown

Once again they pay third parties to do it but they are told to say their BBC TV Licensing by the BBC themselves

You are wrong yet again. The BBC sales goons have strict targets to hit and some people are conned into signing forms which later get falsified by them. One person on TV Licence Resistance was fined even though they told the sales goon she didn't have a TV!.

The situation is though once the signature is on the form the Magistrate will believe the BBC goon so they are fined and forced to get a BBC TV Licence even though she didn't need one. This is one of the reasons they fight tooth and nail to get this information hidden from the public, threads locked, trolled etc

Oh and then there's this guy who had no contact with them so the BBC made up a story to prosecute him!

That is what has happened to me. I use my PC for craft stuff and watching crafting demos on Youtube, I also watch DVDs using my PC, but I have paid for them, why do I need to pay the BBC again? The licence man lied on the form I saw he'd sent to the courts, he wrote on it that I watch TV online, I don't, I don't even have a TV card or whatever you call them and I said he could even check that with my service provider to see what I view online. He was very rude to me and demanded my date of birth and national insurance number. I'm really upset about it all.

And you only get this message when you watch bbc channels live on bbc site.

you dont get this message when you watch a catchup program.

So i dont know what your trying to prove. Plus the problem here is youtube and that doesn't display anything like that.

This is a little misleading OP.

You were not fined £275 for watching youtube.

You had a default judgement against you as you did not attend court. If you attended it should of been fairly easy to win without help from solicitors, also the BBC/TvLicensing have procedures to go through to stop being targeted by the watch squads or letters, a little bit of proactivity would of saved a whole lot of time and money

    Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

If you do not understand the rules yourself, keep it shut and don't confuse those that come on here looking for accurate advice.

Calm down, you might burst a blood vessel.

On a side note does anyone know what the procedure is for watching live TV at work on your phone/pc? I have a TV license at home but I believe they only cover an address and not a person. Should I really have to get a TV license for work watching?

A battery powered device (phone, laptop) not plugged into the mains counts as a portable TV, and so is covered by your home TV license.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

But my work PC is plugged into a mains outlet. I often have it on watching some sort of sport on Sky Go while I am at work. Can they fine me for this?

Possibly but they need to catch you first. They can't fine you anything all they can do is report you for prosecution. The fine is issued by the court and goes to the court it does not get handed over to TV Licensing.

Are you sure your workplace does not have a TV License?
