Rooney, a hero? He knocked a ball into a net - no-one's life depended on it. No cure for cancer... and how does he set an example to the 'yoof'? Banned, returns, banned again, ooh, back again....
These guys are closer to my vote for being 'heroes' - not because they are soldiers but because they are struggling with what life has thrown at them and getting on with it:

With all due respect its not really a fair comparison. Obviously the soldiers are heroes, but that doesn't mean nobody else can be one. I would also argue that if Rooney scores the winning goal in the final that will directly affect at least 30 million England fans who will celebrate widely. Despite the work soldiers do they won't have this affect (unless the UK is actually invaded and they fend off the invaders).
Its a sad state of modern Britain that to millions Rooney is more of a hero than a member of the armed forcesThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Being able to kick the ball into the back of the net doesn't make anyone a heroNeeding to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0

I agree
One person I do admire though is Didier Drogba, he uses his profile and earning potential to give back to the poor in his country. He has raised millions and personally donated millions for work in his home country. His intention when he retires is to use the time to further his foundation
I'm not a Chelsea fan, he is a great player but dives to much, but in an industry blighted by conspicuous consumption and narcissistic personalities. It's nice to see a player genuinely putting his money where his mouth is and committing a lot if time to helping others.
It's a shame players like Rooney don't take a leaf out of his book.0 -

The whole point of football is to put the ball into the opposite net more than the other team does in yours. That's it. Nothing else.
And that's what Rooney did the other night.0 -
Twitter is funny when Rooney plays...
@MattMaloneMD
That's the nearest Rooney has been to bouffant in years!
@frankieboyle
Rooney's look can best be described as "farm rapist"
@NoamDar
Should Rooney no be out trying to save princess fiona?
@GrayAndKeys
Wayne Rooney: the Jimmy Carr of football. Gets millions every year and only gives 1% for his country.
@InbetweenWill
Rooney's playing like he spent the night with Neil's dad.
@frankieboyle
If Wayne Rooney had Andy Carroll's hair he'd look like a rapist cabbage patch doll0
