Tesco Price Inequality - Over 3 times dearer in Liverpool Extra ??

  • I think the crux of the issue here is that you're going to the wrong place if you want any kind of good value. If you're going to get worked up over it, there are plenty of other alternatives in Liverpool where you can get lemonade for the same price which is probably better quality - Sainsbury's, Asda, Aldi, Lidl, Morrison's.

Not too sure who you think you are Dylan, with your 'downmarket' comments, but what I am saying is, why are we suddenly being charged over three times as much for what is essentially the same product?

Both the value lemonade and Cola are advertised online, and most other Tesco's i've been in carry them, so in the area which I'd argue needs them most, you expect me to say nothing?

You're not. The value range is the lowest of the low - they are choosing not to stock it anymore for whatever reason.

If getting your hands on 17p lemonade is such a big issue for you, then perhaps you should shop in a store that caters for your budget.

Yet again you miss the point. I can and do shop elsewhere for,my cheap lemonade now. I'm lucky enough to be able to but lots of people, who shop there can't easily shop elsewhere.

So the way I see it, the 'whatever' reason you're talking about, is simply Tesco charging the local people of Liverpool 8 over three times as much.

You're aware Dylan, that this is a forum about consumer moneysaving, yes?

And as Tesco say themselves, 'Every Little Helps' ?

One or two people on this thread have been downright unpleasant, in my opinion.

Perhaps it's worthwhile thinking of those in society who live in an area where the ONLY shop is a mini-tesco, where everything's inflated and less and less value products seem to be stocked. Lemonade might well seem trivial, but what about cheap pasta? The very kind of thing a great deal of the less well off in society (right now, that includes me) need to feed themselves and their families. Well, the value pasta tesco used to stock isn't there anymore.

And no, this isn't in a posh area - it's in one of the most deprived cities in the country.

Finally, I'd just love to hear what exact suggestion Dylan has as to the "store that caters for [y]our budget" - pray tell.

I think Tesco has a Policy of Variable Pricing to take account of local conditions and demands for various items. ...

    No it doesn't.

Tesco (and other supermarkets) gave an undertaking to the Competition Commission to follow a national pricing policy. Where it has come to notice that this wasn't the case (as was recently the case with some Scottish pricing) they are obliged to stop doing so and claim it was a mistake.
It's my understanding that Tesco have completely different pricing-structures and stocks in their normal Tesco stores, Tesco Extra and Tesco Metro....

I know that Express stores have a different pricing structure, because they are regarded as 'convenience' stores; all normal superstores and Extras should have the same prices. Don't know about Metros.

You're still (maybe choosing to) miss the point somewhat. I can get what I want, elsewhere, it's just inconvenient and needless profiteering from Tesco.

I note you didn't explain how the non car owning customer's supposed to get to the smaller Tesco a mile away to "complete" their shop, then carry the heavy bags of lemonade home.

And you're still missing the point of everyone else in this thread when we are telling you its a pointless thread other than a case of you stamping your feet because you can't get what you want when/where you want it!

Its not needless from Tesco, they adapt what they sell depending on what customers buy. Obviously not enough profits were being made on the 17p lemonade, so they have scrapped it from that store.

    What isn't there to get?

If people don't have a car, then boo hoo, get a taxi or a bus?! Or how about order online, then you don't even need to leave the house! I'm sure if you wrote a letter of complaint to tesco saying 'I'm not happy, you have scrapped a line of lemonade from my local store and I don't drive, how am I supposed to get my lemonade home??' They will laugh at you.

They're not there to think of how you will get your shopping home, they're there to sell it to you!

Give up whilst you can, you're just making yourself look stupid.

And they're not charging 3 times the amount, its a different brand of the product. If they were charging VALUE lemonade at 57p or whatever, then fair enough.

Stop worrying about other people and sort yourself out.

The end point is, that shops chop and change what products they sell on a weekly basis. They need to do this as their wall's aren't made of elastic, there are 100's of new products every month and they simply cannot stock everything.

Not everyone wants to buy value everything, in the same way not everyone wants to buy the most expencive.

Stores do their best at maintaining this balance and they do get it wrong sometimes.

Put a letter of complaint in and if they have enough other complaints (which they obviously should if its SUCH a big issue in your area!) they will probably look at restocking it. But for one person, not a chance.
  • Op I live in Anfield which is pretty close to your area. I understand where your coming from. I have neighbours who will never be able to own a car and carnt afford public transport and dont have the internet for home delivery. These are the people the likes of Tesco are preying on. They know it is difficult for them to shop around in cheaper shops and that they can force them to pay more for a product and lets forget the lemonade for now, this could be for many other items.

The people who are saying negative things may not live in deprived areas like we do and so dont quite get what you are trying to say.

Heres another rip off for areas like ours, ATM's that charge a fee for withdrawals with no nearby alternative free options.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

All normal superstores and Extras do not have the same prices. They have different base prices and different offers on at different times. Express, Metro, Superstore and Extra are all priced differently to each other. Then on top of that you have the petrol stations, even those attached to stores that are priced differently again.
