Tesco Price Inequality - Over 3 times dearer in Liverpool Extra ??

  • Thanks Angelic. As you say the Allerton Road/Mather Avenue store is better. It's not an 'Extra' but they stock the value drinks, plenty of them. It's also a much more affluent area, which as you say, makes it bizarre.

To be honest, the Park Road Extra store is increasingly disappointing. You can rest assured whenever you pop down to the hot chicken counter, they almost always have none, and when asked, 'no,, they're not cooking any more'.

Forgive me Dylan, there was many a time I thought I was entitled as any other to buy a hot chicken from the 'hot chickens that aren't often here counter' ;)

I've got to be honest and ask why anyone particularly price or quality conscious would ever go to Tesco other than for exceptional branded offers.

Because for a lot of people it is there only local shop and not everyone has the means to be able to shop elsewhere

As for the 17p/57p lemonade - They have customers over a barrel - customer needs (wants) lemonade cheaply, if the 17p bottle was on the shelf they would pick that, however in this store they only have the 57p bottle Mr T's knows that customer may have limited means to get to another store therefore will buy the 57p bottle regardless - it is all about the bottom line (if that makes sense)

I'm pondering why you didn't pick it up in the others stores you saw it in?

Don't ponder too much. I do pick it up from other stores when I see it there.

My point (if you really want to ponder) is for what other reason (aside from totally ripping local customers off) Tesco would want to not sell the cheap lemonade/cola at the biggest Tesco store in Liverpool, in an densely residential and relatively poor area.

I'm lucky enough to drive and own a car. Many people who shop there don't and it's there only local supermarket.

I drove 15 mins to Asda this evening. Funnily enough, I got a cooked chicken there no problem, they had plenty, as well as stacks of 18p Smartprice lemonade. ;)

    Speaks for itself really.

I think you've answered your own query.

I live in Liverpool not that far from that Tesco. I havnt shopped at any Tesco for a long time as they are too expensive etc. They know that the L8 area of Liverpool is a deprived area and that many people dont own a carand have no choice. Even public transport can be costly. Im "posh" as I have 2 jobsand a car. I shop in Aldi on the way home from work and Home and Bargain.

The area I live in is as deprived as L8 but we have a variety of shops like Cool Trader you can walk to.
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

Could it not be that the value lemonade does not sell well in that particular store, so they removed it? Supermarkets do this all the time and will only stock what sells in that area.

Though it surprises me that in a value-conscious area they don't stock more 'Everyday Value' lines. Very puzzling.

Hmm. I wonder if it is something slightly different. If you have an area where there is a BIG throughput of fizzy drinks, then it sort of makes sense to stock only the more expensive one.

It all boils down to this: Would a shopper (who has no other store nearby) who drinks a lot of fizzy stuff buy the more expensive drink if the cheaper one is not available? Or would he/she go without? -I suspect that the answer to that question may also answer the question as to why the store only stocks it occasionally (which incidentally is FAR more effective than never stocking it).

Now a shopper in an area with less fizzy drink throughput might be tempted into buying a fizzy drink if the price is extremely low. Such a shopper would probably not buy it at all otherwise. So the store in this case is making a sale that it would otherwise miss, and so it makes sure that the cheaper stuff is always in stock.

I've asked the Manager weeks ago who, this morning, has said it's up to Head Office to supply the store, they've said they have "delivery difficulties" (what? for 3 months?? and why can all the other Tesco's get it?)), and I've got fed up of calling the Customer Service Number, only to hang on waiting for ages only to get cut off before you get through to anyone ...
I would take your problem up with Tesco via their Facebook page, you never know other people from your area might feel the same way ;)
