Why are BT allowed the monopoly on phone lines and exchanges?

Everyone has a right to there opinion without being slagged off by others.
If you are incapable of understanding the difference between providing an infrastructure (sorry about the big word !) and providing a service using that infrastructure I would suggest that you stop making stupid comments about the subject !0 -
You do not need to pay BT for your line rental. I use www.resourceutilities.co.uk, not only is the line rental 10% cheaper than BT (I am on an affinity scheme) but all queries are dealt with by a UK 0800 number, and I can speak to the same person everytime. The guy even knows my name when I call up.
Their service is so good, I have 1 business line with call sign giving me a second number for fax and Business Broadband. I then have two lines at home with them, and also Home Broadband.
So my point is, you don't have to pay BT anything. They are the most useless, inefficient, customer indifferent organisation I have ever had the displeasure to deal with, so immediately I could move my custom elsewhere I did.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

If you read their website, you'll see phrases such as "We use the same BT fault repair system with access to all of BT's engineers & backup" so it is obvious that they are merely WLR re-sellers.
In other words, you are paying BT - you're just doing it via a third party!Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I think you may be deluding yourself there.

That suits me just fine. I pay a cheaper line rental to someone else who then makes a margin on it and pays BT even less. Personally I revel in the fact that BT make less money out of me now. Plus I use 1815 and 1899 so that cuts their revenue down even more. Better inmypocketnottheirs is what I say!Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

That may not be the case ! Many of the other line provider DO undercut BT on the line rental fees, but they charge more for calls and restrict access to other service providers - no such thing as a free meal.
Also, your provider is undoubtedly (as Heinz has said) using BT's infrastructure; so when there are two faults to fix, yours and a BT customer's whose do you think will be fixed first ?
I had a fault with my house telephone wiring a couple of years back which was badly affecting my internet connection. BT immediately came out, found the fault, put in a brand new ADSL only socket for my PC - cost to me ZERO, for 4/5 hours work. I have doubts that any other line provider would have given me that service.
Any organisation as big as BT, especially with its history will not be perfect, but I can clearly see which is the best place to rent my telephone line from, for my requirements.
We do seem to getting away from the OP here, but least the pair of us agree that it is not unreasonable to pay someone for the infrastructure !0 -

I doubt if a company so inept as BT could run a system that would prioritise one level of customers service requirements over another.Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

Actually, I have the same service on Resource Utilities, as I said on first post above. To answer the post you quote above, I only quoted the BT service as a solution to the problem, I certainly do not and would not recommend BT to even my worst enemy.
Don't quite understand your problem hurrah :rolleyes:Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
