Why are BT allowed the monopoly on phone lines and exchanges?

In a thread that starts with the OP's complaint at BT receiving any income at all on its investments in telephone infrastructure, your post boasting that you can save a few pence a month, but still sub-let from BT, hardly seems progressive.
If you have a constructive and interesting suggestions for avoiding line rental altogether, or would add to comment on the likelihood of this either on landlines or newer alternatives like wi-fi, then do so, but at the moment you seem determined to hijack the thread off-topic.
Not exactly off topic, but I shall leave you to your trollish intentions....Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.
