2nd home phone line

Does anyone know who'd be best for this? We'd like a second line as we're going to be running a business from home!
Please don't suggest that we just use our existing phone to save cash! Personally I think it would be fine but my boyfriend really wants to keep our home life and our business life separate!
All advice gratefully received!
(We currently have one BT line - it's another £12 a month I think for a second one. You'd think the second one would be cheaper. Plus they charge a whopping £125 to install it! We also have cable tv and broadband at £20 for the two with Telewest. I think we could add the phone for £10)

Seen as you already have a broadband connection you might want to look at an internet phone. You wouldn't need a second line as it would use your existing internet connection.

Probably best to start reading here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=47695

You can get free incoming calls and pretty cheap outgoing, although I'mno sure how it works if you want to use it for business purposes.
  • You could also try BT Call Sign that allocates a different incoming number. You pay £1.75 a month and plug an adaptor that costs about £25 into your incoming phone line. The second number then rings when that number is dialled. The only draw back is that outgoing calls all go via your existing number and unless you with hold your number then anyone dialling 1471 would then get the original number.

    Hope this helps!

I have this for my business I run from home. I just gave all my friends/family the second number as our home number and run the business with the 'main' number which gets picked up by 1471.

Works a treat. I'm sure we don't have an adaptor though, we just signed up to pay the £1.75 and away we went.

You dont have to have the call splitter. The phone will ring with a different ringing tone for each number hence the product name callsign!.

However you can only make or recieve one call at a time.

I really like that idea of paying £1.75 a month to have just the one line but...
It's the sort of business where people think nothing of calling us at 11 p.m. or 6 a.m. and ideally we'd like to be able to stick on the answerphone on one phone and "close the door" on it whilst still being able to answer the other one. I like our families to be able to reach us even in the middle of the night just in case of emergency. Can you get the first line to divert to answerphone whilst the other continues to ring out?
    Thanks!

It can only accept and you can only make one call at a time, but yes you can route one number for your business calls to say a phone with answering machine ,and the other number to your personal phone. Your need a Twin Talk Call splitter to do this.See
