Hi guys, I have a lot of potatoes in the cupboard which are sprouting and don't want to waste them, there's only two of us and we don't eat them every night, so wondered whether they would be ok if I peeled and cut them into roastie sizes, then froze them raw?

    Thanks

    Hi Hanna,

Raw potatoes don't freeze well but once they're cooked they do. These threads should help:

    Freezing potatoes

    frozen HM roast potatoes

    Freezing fresh Mash

    freezing jacket potatoes

I'll add your thread to the first link later to keep the advice in one place.

pink is right - raw potatoes dont freeze well - they go black! that is why they are supposed to be stored in a 'frost free' place.
you can par boil them and then freeze, then they are ready to be roasted or boiled.
you could also fully cook some and make mash - that freezes well!

I have tonnes of potatoes! I was thinking of freezing them ready for roasties. If I parboil them, then cover them in goose fat & open freeze them before bagging, would this be ok?

Yes, that should be fine. I normally roast mine in batches, cook them slightly less than I would. cool and freeze. Then reheat from frozen.

I par-boil, cool, open freeze and then chuck into hot oil from frozen when it comes to cooking, no problem. Not tried freezing with goose fat but I do freeze par-boiled wedges that are already coated in olive oil (so the seasoning sticks) and that works fine.

I always do this - so when I want to make roast potatoes but either haven't got any spuds in or can't be bothered to peel any I just bung some in my roasting tin. If potatoes need using up I'll parboil them for freezing to to save wasting them.
