Do bags of spuds really have a sell by date on them? no really do they? :D what happens when you serve yourself in the supermarket?

:) Trust me, you will know when a spud is off, you really won't mistake the smell. It comes into the league of bad eggs and fish  No idea why as these much to a spud.
  • Sorry Couldnt help it but my spuds are freezing at the moment bloody english Weather.

if you take them out of any plastic packaging and put them somewhere cool and dark they should last a lot longer. we buy a big sack of spuds and store them in the shed for months

ok so last week bought asdas 2 for £2 bag of spuds now im wondering can i chop some chips out of them and freeze them and roast spuds as wont use them all by sell by date?
culd i make some mash and freeze it???

Not only can you freeze them, they can make *awesome* roasties. Peel, drop into a pan of water, bring to the boil and cook for 10 mins, then drain, shake the pan to rough up the surfaces, wait to cool and then put them in the freezer.

You can roast from frozen or defrost them first, doesn't really matter - but the freezing makes the insides all lovely and fluffy.

Sell-by date? I dug mine up in July, they've been in a cool, dark place since then and are still superb. As I've been away for several weeks this winter, I still have quite a lot left but they'll be fine for months yet. Maincrop taters are intended to be kept all winter.
  • i frooze some s[puds yesterday but they went brown why has this happened???

Did you cook them first? If you froze them raw that's why they went brown, they need to be pre-cooked...
