    Hi HappyTails,

I'm told by the guys I work with that the P0170 is nearly always the 'MAF sensor' (Mass Air Flow) which is a sensor that monitors air flow in the engine, if it isn't working properly the Engine Management may not fuel the engine correctly leading to rough running, stalling, etc. This is the fault that is causing the engine light to come on as it's emissions related.

Easy to get to these units, normally on top of the engine, if lucky may just need cleaning, but may need replacing. Garage shouldn't charge more than 1/2 hr labour to change one on most cars.

I didn't get much help on the other code sorry.

I'm not saying you should act on the above advice, just that it's useful to bear in mind when a garage talks to you, so you know what they're talking about. Best thing is to look up the codes on-line I'm told. I'm no expert myself, I just work with some of these guys.

Hope this is of some help

Thanks rushy that is very helpful! My brother thought it was the maf sensor too and google also suggests this as first port of call. Going to rope the brother in on weekend to clean it and see if that helps. If not ill be ordering a maf sensor online next week and begging him to fit it ;) the other code may be linked in to this first problem so might kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Car got 300 miles out of a tank that should have gotten about 400 out of it so its definitely running rich :(

Happytails...sounds like a plan. You clean them with a spray of some sort, just be very careful with the MAF sensor itself in the middle, as they are very easy to damage as very flimsy/delicate, you don't want to cause additional problems by manhandling it.

    Hope it fixes it.

  • I cleaned a maf sensor by leaving it stuck in a lemon overnight. Found that one on the internet!

I was really Ill fri/sat with D&V and it really took it out of me, so today ive been catching up on housework and taking the dog/kids out so nothing listed on Ebay, though i have packaged up 5 ebay items for the post office tomorrow (earnings from these went towards my daughters birthday presents).
