Kazza, any chance you could edit the thread title to remove the "Mini"? It seems to confuse some newbies.
Hi Kazza, I second that request.

    Pretty please. :)

You can edit the title in "Advanced" editing mode.

The thread title is already called "Cash ISAs: The Best Currently Available List".

If you go to the first post and then scroll to the top of it, you will see the thread title next to the 'green circle icon with the black arrow'.

Unfortunately, the MSE forum has a quirk which caches the old thread title even after it has been amended. I actually made the change a couple of years ago, but because the thread is more than a few years old, MSE has cached the old thread title at the top of the board. At the time, I asked the site admins if they could assist, but there was nothing they could do.

I was going to launch a new Best Cash ISAs thread this year, but as rates are so dire, I might delay this until rates pick up a bit.
    Please call me 'Kazza'.

Hi Kazza, it occurs to me that it could be quite a while before things pick up on savings in general and, perhaps, making the change while it is quiet would be better than waiting till it gets busy.

Just a thought. :). Thanks, as ever, for your work on our behalf.

  • I'm considering opening a HSBC current account so I can get their ISA paying 2.75% on balances above £15000.

Are there any disadvantages to opening a current account just to get an ISA? I would close the current account if I was transferring to another provider. Does this kind of thing affect your credit rating?

I would not normally consider opening a current account to get an ISA but am currently with M&S, their rate is dropping in March and there's not much out there.:(

Just looking at HSBC's website and it says you have to consent to a credit register search to open its e-isa, this is when you already have a current account with them. Do providers usually do a credit register search when opening a savings account?

What exactly do you mean by 'credit rating'?

Current account providers will check your credit record for any defaults, missed payments etc if they are offering you an overdraft or a debit card/cheque book. These checks would have no adverse effect, unless you made lots of applications in a short time. I've recently opened 3 BOS current accounts with Vantage, and despite clearly saying 'NO thank you' I've been sent 3 debit cards :(

This will not be the same as the credit check done for a current account application. It is simply an identity check for money laundering purposes. Many banks do this automatically, even if you already hold an account with them.

If you've never seen yours, I'd recommend you apply to all 3 credit reference agencies and obtain statutory copies of your file. They cost only £2 each!

Wonderful thread! Last year I felt "forced" into investing what my wife and I could afford of our allowance, back into oic's. This year, with the best offers being so much below inflation I have done the same.
To be fair, last years foray turned fifteen grand into fifteen grand plus thirty quid, so I can't claim to be Warren Buffet up to now!

2.75% is not such a great rate. Coventry 60 day notice gives you 2.80% and you don't have to go through the hassle of opening a current account.

I am still hoping that ISA rates might be slightly better during March - although with the government's funding for leasing what the rates will be is anyone's guess.

ALL Selftrade accounts are currently closed to new applicants since late January.

I understand this is in agreement with the FSA and doesn't affect existing clients..

I've got an old shares isa with Selftrade. Would I be a new or existing applicant re their cash isa ?

Unfortunately it doesn't allow transfers in.

The HSBC one is the best of a bad bunch right now if you need to transfer
