I did managed to open an account with NS&I. As i made the application on the 28th March thats when the account opened, i sent the confirmation a week later after i changed my mind. I guess i was lucky. Made £4.40 interest in the first week :)

Thanks for the concern Suzey ;) I would like to say thanks to all the members for the advice i was given, without this i would never have opened an account.

    Thanks guys!

No probs, sounds like you were very lucky!

Had a few exams at uni recently, so a little pre occupied aswell.

Hopefully i will be opening a new isa for this year or maybe adding to my current one.
  • Hello all!Having heard about the benefits of an ISA,I duly trooped down to my local Barclays to open one(unfortunately,I am about to be made redundant at the end of April, and was looking to put my redundancy payment into an ISA that I could save in,but easily access if need be). However, when I(finally!) got to see a member of staff to set it up,I was told that as I don't have a driving licence(because I dont drive!),because I don't have an up-to-date passport(I haven't been abroad for years) and because I don't have any benefit books(because I'm not eligible for any benefits!)and didn't have any other id which fitted their criteria,I was unable to open one!Even though I could show them a letter confirming my redundancy, council tax bills, several bank statements from the Alliance& Leics.bank account (which I have had for the last 12 years) and have a mortgage with the Abbey(didn't have any trouble getting that despite my lack of passport, driving licence and benefit book!).This seems like discrimination to me(I'm a perfectly legal, decent, honest and truthful humanbeing,m'lud!!!)Anyway,I have duly complained to the great power that is Barclays bank, and they are "investigating (my) complaint."It just seems to me that here I am saying to Barclays,"here's afew thousand quid to invest",and they're saying "ooh,no-we couldn't possibly!"(which by my reckoning at least is fairly ridiculous!).It isn't as if they are risking anything afterall!I understand that in these days of tightened security, maybe that's an issue for some reason, but come on!Anyway,if I don't get any joy from Barclay's reply,I'll be complaining to the financial ombudsman on a matter of principal-watch this space!!

ailurophile - this is in line with their money laundering whatchamacallit. They just want to make sure that you're not some drug baron trying to hide vice money :-)
  • Hi there,Fablad75!Thanks for your reply, but it illustrates my point exactly-why should I be judged so negatively purely on the basis of not having those things(i.e.passport;etc)-since when was that a crime in itself? If I had a gun licence(yeah, right!)and was in prison for something(and had a legal document to say so),apparently,I could have got an isa(true!)-well pardon me for not wanting to shoot anything/anyone and not being in prison!!!

When you open the barclays isa via website or paper form. Please be aware that they have there other mini isa which gives a poor rate of interest option just next to it.

I'm sure many people will have selected this wrong option.
I applied for my barclays isa yesterday. I asked the lady incharge at barclays why would some one apply for a barclays isa and select the poor rate of return isa. And you know what her answer was. her expession said it all

I'm looking into an ISA for this year - only about £20 per month but it's a start. However because of my husband's family and a refinance loan, credit is somewhat lacking. Will this affect me? If so what is the best way to sort ourselves out.?

Savings accounts dont get credit checked.
  • Hi there,

I want to open an ISA with 3k for this tax year. At the moment, the best rate for me seems to be

Barclay ISA at 6.31% tax free, I know the annual rate is 5.5% with 1% gross bonus for 12 month. I would think the annual rate for me is actually 5.31% as I am claiming net interest. I would think the bonus would be 0.08% rather then 1%, tax at 20%. Does anyone know how much interest I would recieve in a year with a 3k deposit?

or Bradford and Bingley at 6.15%

I think these are the best rate, does anyone know which gives a better rate?

    Thanks

    Hi everyone.

Does anyone know if Barclays, Abbey or Northern Rock charge you for transfering FROM their ISAs?

Apologies if this has been covered, I couldn't find it.

I'm thinking of opening a new Isa with Barclays or NR for this year's allowance and ALSO transfering my previous years' allowances from Abbey Postal (now a poor rate in comparison) to possibly Abbey Direct, or Northern Rock. How does this sound? Is it okay for me to open one isa then transfer to another?

    Thanks
