Well I met her exact opposite today. :(

Old bloke doing 30 , slowing down to nothing on the slip road. I had no choice but to practically stop behind him (there's a grass verge between the slip road and main carriageway, he slowed to nothing at the end of the verge).

My heart was beating faster this morning.

I bet he was driving a 'surgical boot' as well :D

You can pick them usually, I've found that in the past I've spotted just what you describe before I get to the end of the slip so I slow and give him an acre of room in preparation for the 'stop at the end' routine. Unfortunately I then find I have a car up my arris because I've done the sensible thing and actually read the situation. You can't win some days can you?

They've clearly been reading the Middle Lane Owners Club guide to motorway driving.

(Full disclosure: I wrote that site back in 2006. It doesn't make any money though)

    Ha ha!

When I pass one of these morons when the next car in lane 1 is 500 yards away I usually give a couple of quick taps of the horn from lane 3 & my Mrs points (accompanied sometimes with a few other gestures) at lane 1.

Interestingly, 90% of MLH's we do this to immediately move into lane 1!

Anyone complaining about matching the speed of the traffic, people not pulling out of the left lane for you, or anyone you think is speeding up or won't let you in - do consider that there may be a gap BEHIND that person, remember that you've been told several times on this thread already that the person in the slip road is the one that has to give way.

You and your Mrs sound like a couple of prats.

Most drivers see examples of what they feel are examples of bad driving but it is not up to them to police the road network.

From lane 3, you are not in a position to determine whether the vehicle in lane 2 is gaining on the vehicle in lane 1. All you see is vehicles in the left lanes travelling more slowly.

Police advice on this topic is as follows and it also applies to lane 3 hoggers ;)
If you are overtaking a number of slower vehicles, it may be safer to remain in the middle or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed, rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left hand lane once you have finished overtaking, or if you are delaying traffic behind you.

    How absolutely true :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

BTW, Tobster, that's illegal use of the horn.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
  • So what the hell do you do on the slip road then.. Do you turn your head driving at 40mph to make sure there is a gap in traffic on the motor way? And what happens if while you've got your head turn looking at the motorway traffic you drive into the car in front?

Those sticky out things and the shiny thing in the middle are mirrors. You only need to glace at them to judge when to move out. Before you actually make the manovure you check your blind spot - only takes half a second.

If you are taking so long to judge the situation you run into the back of another car you shouldn't be on the road IMHO.

Whatever floats your boat I guess.

You would look like a pair of lunatics though.

It also occurs to me that while you and your Mrs are performing this routine and having a good giggle, your attention is likely to be less than 100% on your own driving.
I wonder what would happen if you came across an incident in the road ahead (a vehicle or item of shed load suddenly crossing the central reservation, for example).

I think it's very rare to find a slip road that joins a motorway without it's own lane. In the case where a slip road does join into a motorway the slip road is usually long enough for anyone to slip in safely and in a timely manner.

It's more of a problem with dual carriageways with the sliproad is much shorter, throw in rush our traffic and it becomes a real hazard. I was joining a 40mph dual carriageway from a sliproad a while back, a Nissa Micra was doing 30-35mph ish ion lane one. When I was on the sliproad I was level with the Micra, and decided to slow down to slip in after it. It was a serious hazard, the sliproad got piled ip because the Micra was driving so slow and jamming up traffic behind it.
