Why is it that when people come down a slip road to join a major road they just put their foot down and sod everyone else - I was always taught to go down the slip and wait for a safe time to proceed?

Last one that did that to me was a police car. Tried to barge in, worst driver I've seen for ages.

You cannot 'wait' on a slip road especially if its a motorway slip road. The slip road is meant to be used to get your speed up to the same level of the traffic that is already on the road that you want to join, that way you can just ease in between the traffic already on that road.. the people that you think are doing the wrong thing are in fact doing the right thing. You are in fact driving badly if you think you can wait for a safe time to proceed on a slip road.

Joining the motorway. When you join the motorway you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway. You should

• give priority to traffic already on the motorway
• check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane
• not cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder
• stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway
• remain in the left-hand lane long enough to adjust to the speed of traffic before considering overtaking

You should stop completely, and try to join traffic doing 40/50/60/70mph from a standing start. That will keep the roads flowing.

Seems like you may have been taught badly then, enter a motorway with a view to not causing people behind you to have to brake suddenly, so you should be accelerating when entering a motorway.

Of course they have priority. But they should be driving in such a way that other traffic can join the road (else it's those already on the road that are pig ignorant ).

It is you that is pig ignorant, you mention motorways, the traffic on a good day will be flowing 50+MPH, you don't potter along at 20-30mph onto the motorway, you will be a nuisance.

The drivers who are already on the motorway are given warning signs of the slip road entering. They should take the opportunity to move into the next lane to allow a slower moving vehicle to enter the motorway.

You can help potential traffic entering the motorway by carefully moving over from the left hand lane, to the middle lane. This will help them join more safely. If this is impossible due to heavy traffic in the other lanes, try to adjust your speed to allow the joining traffic some space. Never get into a race with them. Look well ahead and see what vehicles are joining and how they are spaced, and consider adjusting your speed.

You should definately not stop on a slip road entering a motorway, unless the traffic on the motorway itself is at a standstill.

In truth, neither the vehicles on the motorway nor those coming down the sliproad have priority. They should both be taking account of each other, and making adjustments to their speed accordingly.

IMO, its easier to join a motorway if you're going quicker than the cars/lorries on the inside lane. Its easier to brake to slot in than try and accelerate, especially if you're piddling along at 30mph wanting to swing infront of Eddie Stobbart. If you 'stop' on a motorway sliproad, waiting to join a moving road, then you're a f*cking idiot.

However if its like some slip roads on the A38 between lichfield and Derby, your choice is either gun it if you have a car capable of 0-60 in 7s, or go to the end and wait for a gap.
