IMO, its easier to join a motorway if you're going quicker than the cars/lorries on the inside lane. Its easier to brake to slot in than try and accelerate, especially if you're piddling along at 30mph wanting to swing infront of Eddie Stobbart. If you 'stop' on a motorway sliproad, waiting to join a moving road, then you're a f*cking idiot.

However if its like some slip roads on the A38 between lichfield and Derby, your choice is either gun it if you have a car capable of 0-60 in 7s, or go to the end and wait for a gap.

Ah somebody local, yes I agree and see the mentality often. People pass their tests and then fail to learn to drive
  • way i was tought.

build up and match speed on slip road, check blindspot, check mirrors, be aware, use all of the slip road if need be but never ever stop unless you have to i.e traffic jam.

on approach to a slip road for exiting vehicles, try and move over to the next lane(s), if not feasable have curtesy and ease off accellerator and let out the vehicle, trouble is everytime i do this some pratt joins doing 30MPH and almost causes a multicar pileup.

The drivers who are already on the motorway are given warning signs of the slip road entering. They should take the opportunity to move into the next lane to allow a slower moving vehicle to enter the motorway.

You should definately not stop on a slip road entering a motorway, unless the traffic on the motorway itself is at a standstill.

In truth, neither the vehicles on the motorway nor those coming down the sliproad have priority. They should both be taking account of each other, and making adjustments to their speed accordingly.

Dunno where you learnt the Highway Code, a vehicle should not pull out to make other road users alter their speed or course!

Likewise people needlessly pulling out of slow lane on the assumption there 'might' be something coming down the slip road. In doing so making fast lane or over taking lane the slow lane!

They should alter their speed to suit the conditions and traffic down the slip road, if no space, its legally a stop sign but wouldnt advocate that at any cost. As above dont expect to enter at less than 50+ mph, its not a right.
Also courteous for the slip roaders to indicate when they see a space, not put them on upon entering slip road hogging overtaking lane.

So people already on major road do not have priority because of these pig ignorant people

People on the "major road" should move into the RH lane (if safe and clear) to allow people to join the road.

I always "boot it" upto the speed of the traffic, there's not a lot more dangerous than some numpty joining a 70mph road (motorway or dual-carriageway), tentatively at 40mph....... Combine that with fog and idiots with no lights on and your going to see a major accident (which you'll then have to blame on fireworks or something).

I've not often had trouble joining from a sliproad, in fact only twice (and very recently), one guy didn't want me to join in the artic sized gap in front of him on the M5, decided to accelerate to tailgate the car in front and thus stop me "queue jumping". I pulled in behind and then overtook in lane 2......
The other was on a DC where the on/off slip roads are joined, he was coming off, I was joining, but instead of thinking "oh he'll be accelerating to 70mph and I need to slow down to 35 for the corner", he decides to cut in front of a car doing 70 and then slam on the anchors....... He was driving a white Prius though, so probably not the sharpest tool in the shop.

This is maybe why there are so many "middle lane hoggers" - they're all staying in that lane to enable people getting on at the next junction, 5 miles down the road, an easy entrance.
I'm a firm believer in matching the speed of those on the inside lane and drifting in, to expect people to move into the middle or outside lane (depending on the road) is, in my opinion, foolish as it is rarely possible, and some drivers simply refuse to.

My view is you should try to get your speed up and blend into the flow of traffic. Unfortunately you do get people deliberately speeding up to block you which can result in you running out of slip road so having to brake and get out behind them but most drivers in my area do flash you out or pull into the right hand lane for you.

    Leaving the motorway

    272

Unless signs indicate that a lane leads directly off the motorway, you will normally leave the motorway by a slip road on your left. You should
    • watch for the signs letting you know you are getting near your exit
    • move into the left-hand lane well before reaching your exit
    • signal left in good time and reduce your speed on the slip road as necessary
Just a reminder for drivers who slow before joining the slip road. That's what its for.

I think the problem is; if its quite a busy road, you may have to ruduce your speed that slow that you get down to 10-15MPH and then its too hard to join.

if everyone else is doing 60.

if you spot a gap and think ill boot it and make it maybe thats better? donno
