  • oh my god i thought it was just my family that had a button tin!!!!!

    :j

my kids have spent hours, as i did, going through my mums button tin ... and yes it brings back so many memories ... i find the smell of it strangely comforting!! my mums button tin is an old ornate looking blue biscuit tin ... think she got it when she got married, so that would date it to c.1950's!

my mum died 3 years ago, so i still cry when i look at it!
but lots of happy memories :T

  • Great thread :T I'm 45 now and my mum passed the 'button tin' onto me last year and I immediately burried my hands into the buttons just like I used to when I was little. The buttons are still in the original tin she kept them in with hot air balloons all over the side & even though the tin is all scuffed and bashed, it really is the only place I could ever keep the buttons.

Some of the older ones especially are so gorgeous - I love to use them in jewellery designs or sew them onto cushions.
  • My mum still has her Nanas button tin but i do hope i get it at some point. It holds a lot of memories for me too. I have started my own now, and i never throw clothing away without first salvaging everything i can from it. :)

  • I love my button tin too,and I agree about the memories they hold.
Mine has buttons from my grans old tin and lots from my childrens old clothing.
I never throw any stuff out without salvaging the zips and buttons first.
I've never bought buttons for years as I recycle mine and was quite shocked at how much they sell for nowadays.

I used to love looking through button tins when I visited my gran and aunts. I remember the mother of pearl buttons being my second favourites. My favourite buttons were some big red buttons in the shape of scottie dogs.
