The skip was delivered today and I have it for 7 days ( I certainly didn't need the other two for that long!) This one is designated for the garage junk (a huge letting go for me of my late husband's D.I.Y., fix everything in the house materials) and possibly the garden. I 've decided that if I don't now what it's for, then it's going- a bit rash but it's been there for years without being missed.
A slight wobble soon after I started as there's quite a lot of car stuff. I asked my neighbour, who's a vintage car buff, if he wanted any of the stuff-I saw the instant look of panic on his face as he said he had his own junk!
Good news-I found a demijohn to take down to my son so feel less guilty about the fifteen I gave away on Freecycle!
  • How funny, my Mum has a red shortbread tin full of buttons that I used to play with when I was young. Then when I left home, she divided her stash for me and eventually, my children played with them too. DD opened the box the other day for a craft project and took great delight in pointing out her old favourites. She's at Uni!

On the hoarding front, I passed on the 'twin' teapot today, along with some food bits and a recipe book. The carrier bag for the cs is still by the front door but more goes in it every day. I am getting up the courage now to say, 'No, I don't like that,' and in it goes, even though we now have empty cupboards in the house.

I challenged myself to sort out my jewellery box today. Not just the 'junk' jewellery but the good stuff. I let go of some decent 'twin' earrings, some lone ones that will never be matched, some gold and silver chains. It feels awful: some of it is really valuable and some was given to me or DD on special occasions. However, if we don't wear it, what use is it? Our church is asking for old gold and silver so I'm going to see if this is the right kind of thing for them and if so, we'll have contributed to the upkeep of a beautiful old building for the community.

Keep going chaps, your posts are inspiring.

I took a pile of unwanted craft stuff from DD's boxes and my own stash to the Scrap Store today. That was fine but I then started looking around at things and....tore myself away before I succumbed. Argh.

I've got a pile downstairs for the CS tomorrow too. These luggage holdalls that I brought down from the attic have been of more use over the last couple of days than they've been for the last ten years, lol. They hold tons of bits and pieces and are easy to carry. I'm almost tempted to keep them for CS deliveries...except of course I could just use one of the other ones I'm keeping.

I really need to make a determined assault on The Craft Stash though. It's rolled up to the front of my subconcious and has started nagging. I seem incapable of decluttering one room completely, I flit around doing sections all over the place. Oh well, I expect it will all join up one day eh?

contessa, that's exciting that you have a skip. (I am easily impressed).

pq, that is funny about you not liking things. Earlier today I was thinking about how I didn't actually even like:

our dining room chairs (old and leak dust from the sponge base)
    our mismatched tea towels
our 4 Christmas mugs (terrible artwork)

Thing is, I don't think that I have ever actually liked them. They will go eventually, when I can afford to replace them.

So what things have you all "acquired" (rarely "bought" as a considered decision) that you dislike?

  • Ref old jewellery - I took mine to a gold dealer this week and got nearly £2000 - one 2" bag of loose bits of chain link and squashed earrings was £60 (I nealry fell over!) One chain link alone was £140, even earring backs got nearly £2 each, so I hope the church is taking it to get weighed rather than selling it as bric a brac PQ otherwise you might be better off selling it to a gold dealer and donating the money instead

    ......and exhale

was holding my breath as OH has gone to the tip with 2 minging coffee tables, some old fence panels, a bag of small broken electricals (2 irons, a juicer, an electric knife and some rubbish xmas tree lights) and a bag of rags for recycling. THere is always a chance that he would refuse to take something (it was touch and go with the lights as they are Thomas the Tank engine which our DS used to be v. keen on - but he is now 13  and they never worked very well anyway). He has strict instructions not to bring any of it back.

Another bag of rags has been earmarked for engine cleaning at a steam railway he volunteers on, and yet more clothing and bedding for charity shop on Monday. And some second hand school uniform is going into school on Monday as they have recently changed the uniform but year 11 don't have to - but the uniform shop isn't selling the old one any more, so school are selling second hand.

I have the task of tidying and cleaning the whole house this weekend, so more tip trips may be in order. A desk is going to a student's house tomorrow because hers is too wobbly and we have a spare which is just somewhere for carp to sit.

    Onwards...

The third of five loads of washing is nearly on the line.

Packed away the dry washing and had a good tidy round of the house.

Managed to chuck the entire contents of a lever arch folder. I knew what it was. I didn't even check it, just binned the lot. Well done me. Only a hoarder will know what an achievement it is, if I say so myself.

The folder has gone to my dad's. Perfectly all right but even the cover prompts bad feelings.

Half finished knitting project went to Mil's to be finished.

Really manky handcream tube went in the bin. It was nearly finished.

Have a folder to be scanned and chucked. Quite important stuff that I may need to refer to again.

Yayy - I have just sorted through a huuuuge bag of packaging from various am*zon parcels to use for ebaying. But I have had it a year and not used it.

So I have kept back 3 items which I may use and recycled the rest. :T

Been meaning to do that for about 6 months.
