Hoarding...not just on TV

<delurks - great thread! I'm not a hoarder but perhaps being OS most of the time means I can have difficulty passing up a bargain I don't strictly need. This thread is helping me see where I can be a bit more ruthless with things (Philadelphia tubs, anyone?):o>
Just to say re the methotrexate - I currently take Azathioprine and Hydroxychloroquine for similar reasons. There are obvious side effects too but give it a chance, I would suffer almost any side effects now rather than go back to the pain I suffered. And actually, they have been fairly minimal/liveable with.
Good luck with your meds x

Sybil don't know if it would help but dd sounds quite similar to little bear and when we did her room, I boxed all the things up that I though should go and dated the boxes these then went into the attic. When she has obviously missed something and asked where it is I have just told her that I put it in the attic so that it didn't get broken whilst we where decorating and have then retreived it for her. So far out of 4 large boxes of stuff she has missed 3 items, and 6 months from the date on the boxes the rest can go (well in theory anyway
)
Didn't manage to catch up yesterday due being tied up most of the day with a fiasco of a delivery. Waited in all morning for my AF order, then rememberd that I could track it on line, only to find out that it was delivered at 10am to a house at the opposite end of the street to me (and I live on a long street) was fuming as I'd waited in all morning so tried to ring the couriers but couldn't get past the automated system without the number on the "sorry you where out" card, which I didn't have as they never came to my address. So I had to go and collect it and it weighed a ton (full of trays of pop and everything) tried carrying it and looked like a idiot because my knees where buckling, tried dragging it and ended up looking like a bigger idiot so ended up doing a wierd carry, drag, wiggle routine all up our street. Was knackered and fuming when I got in so fired off a big rant to the delivery company, who sent me a bog standard reply which wound me up more so I had another rant. Then this morning when I arrived home after walking the dogs the delivery driver was waiting for me with a box of chocolates and an apology (cringe, cringe cringe). Now I feel bad for getting him into trouble, I can't win.
And to top it off the boxes off the order are still cluttering up my hallway as they're too good to throw out and I can think of at least a million uses for themBe strong because things will get better...it might be stormy now but it can't rain forever!!0 -
Hello lovely people
Byatt - LOL Pickle is the name of my cat because she is the colour of BR****ON Pickle..a tortie mix. I have a daft saying in our house if there is a pile of clutter/kitchen sides a mess/ car boot etc its a right pickle pot..daft quirky saying but seemed appropriate for the user name!
I have just send a big long post and now seem to have lost it so apologies if it turns up twice.
Help, i must be a closet hoarder, genetic tendancy from my dad.On the surface all looks OK bit messy/cluttery but open my loft (!!) garage (hangs head in shame) not to mention various cupboards and drawers. I feel like i have a double life, all in control on the surface but underneath i am suffocating with it all. Not to much of a problem aquiring stuff but getting anything out of the house is sooo painful. Children memorabilia the worse school certificates, books, drawings, school diaries, baby clothes i find impossible to tackle. Reading this thread has brought up a whole host of emotional baggage. I simply dont know where to start...0 -

Hello Downsizing and Picklepot.
It's so inspirational to read about everyone's stories and the tenderness in trying to raise children without either traumatising them or inadvertently encouraging hoarding behaviours.
My Mum was trausmatised by losing one of her few treasures (a ratty ball of yarn) when she was admitted into hospital for a tonsilectomy from the childrens' home where she lived for nearly a year. So she was over-aware that any little item which looked like complete trash might be a child's dearest treasure and over-comensated by hanging on to everything.
I mentioned that she used to frisk the rubbish I was turning out, didn't I? I left home at 16 and I still feel her at my elbow when I'm turning stuff out................:rotfl:I have some fascinating and maddening inner dialogues and then I can go over to her house and have some real life ones as well.
Today I have taken 3 bags to the c.s. with two more to leave over the weekend. Feeling good. I have also reached a decision about the Good Jacket; although it was expensive and is virtually unworn, I don't use it and probably won't use it and should let it go into the c.s. to serve someone else and raise money for the worthy cause. And my 3 foot clothes rail will have about another 2 inches of free space as a result.
It's all good.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Sybil, what a lovely post, thank you, you are so kind. :A
I think all the suggestions about the bedroom, particularly the grand opening with ribbon, are great.

I can't remember if I welcomed you Kat, I get very self absorbed sometimes.
I can totally relate to the image of sitting for 2 hours in the middle of a pile of shoe boxes trying to decide what I can do with them. :cool:0 -

You was the first to welcome me Byatt, thank you.
I love this thread and reading everyone's posts wether they are about hoarding or family issues (me too but that's a novel for another time) they have all struck a chord with me and made me realise that sticking my head in the sand is just getting me through the day and not really moving me forward.
My hoarding is the tidy sort of hoarding, my house is passable most of the time, but every available corner contains a storage unit, and every storage unit and cupboard is packed to capacity, and the attic of doom actually gives me nightmares.
Apart from the fact that far too much of my life has been wasted putting payslips and bank statements, etc into date order (started work at 15, am now 44 and have every onewhy????)
Anyway I am classing this forum as my "new start" and intend to try and post my discarded items everyday and hopefully give you all a few giggles over the utter carp I hoard and my ridiculous reasons for why I have been guarding it like the crown jewels :rotfl:Be strong because things will get better...it might be stormy now but it can't rain forever!!0 -
