Hello fellow hoarders
Well my (massive) box of kitchen stuff went to the CS via MIL so thats gone *YAY*
I really want to take a pic of this room to shame me into getting a wiggle on but I dont know how to get pics from iphone to here. THe ebay stuff is STILL festering on the sofa in a ginormous underbed storage bag BUT its free listing this w/e so I WILL find time to do it- Im thinking Sunday cos then I can do my Sunday-Sunday listing.
I have cleared my desk today and made a start on tackling my debts - paid £1000 off the credit card of doom *polishing halo furiously* and have set up standing order/plan to pay off the rest (by Christmas) I have paid of both catalogues (bar £21 to Littlewoods which I will pay this week but is interest free so not too scary) and I have just reminded self to pay off last £3.57 on CC #2. Im GOOD!!!
I am feeling freer just being able to sit here AT MY DESK on my laptop and not in the front room trailing cables all over the place (then losing them when I dont bother putting them away)
Slugs and snails.........I have a mini greenhouse in the back garden (plastic jobby) and the slugs and snails had a feast on my tomoatoes, THEN pooed everywhere and THEN I found two snails COPULATING after their feast and poo fest. Well I can tell you the earth moved for them, as they flew over the back fence still connected.

Suggestions, please - what can I do with quilts? I have many single quilts, and only one single bed. I also have many duplicate double quilts. They take up lots of room, but it seems a shame to just bin them.
.
I intend to staple one over the wooden headboard, effectively padding it. I pinned it in place to try it & it's comfortable, but haven't got around to covering it & making it a permanent fixture yet
A single summer one has gone into the cat's carrier.
And, they are useful to pad a yoga mat to act as a mattress, if children's friends come to stay over.0 -
animal rescue centres will often take old quilts0

I found something else to be very pleased about too. A new and used shop has opened up in the vicinity that will sell stuff for commission. So 4 decent items that were taking up a lot of space has gone there. I wouldn't chuck it out but was finding it too much hassle to put it in the local paper.
I said to DH that we should have a declutter 500 items over the summer hols. He thinks we don't have that much stuff, but it is surprising how much it mounts up.
We went out today with the children for a nice meal and a walk by the sea. Feel shattered but a lot more positive. Glad the soggy weather has stopped. We had no rain at all while we were out but nearly didn't go at all as it was raining when I woke up and persistently grey.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
VJsmum, just a quick word on the subject of quilts - old quilts in halfway decent nick really can be worth a few bob, depending on style etc., particularly handmade ones; the homemade country bedroom never seems to go out of style. I've sold on a fair few eiderdowns & quilts, as well as crochet blankets, but you could have knocked me down with a feather when I took several of my stepfather's "Brentford Nylons" solid-colour green & purple 70s single quilts along to the vintage market & I'd sold them all for £10 each by 10am! Though I have to say, the quality, even though they're nylon, beats anything available now hands-down, & they'd been well-looked after.
However, I don't want to encourage anyone to hang onto bedding that's well past it's best in the hope of making a killing on it, so I'll shut up now!Angie - GC Aug25: £292.26/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0 -
Good evening
I tried today to put all the decluttering stuff in one room, next to the computed so it's handy for getting onto e*bay this weekend.
Then I started the garden. I collected all the old metal, put it in the car together with all the children and we went for a day out to the local metal scrap yard. They asked for photo ID, etc, but I agree with that if it stops church roofs going missing. Anyway I got £18 for my efforts! Things like an old swing, patio door frame, taps, frying pan, nuts and bolts, plumbing fittings, wire, etc. Normally stuff I would have put in the bin.
Then a friend came round and asked if I was decorating the lounge. She commented because she thought it looked empty! Result!!
aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter0 -

Modern duvets are great on the bed UNDER a crisp fitted bottom sheet.
Great to hear about making money from stashes really IF it helps us derichard - I am building a pile of metal ready for the dealers AND have a friend lined up to come too, to make me go there
Good luck today everyone, I wont be online or decluttering but will be sending you vibesYou never know how far-reaching something good, that you may do or say today, may affect the lives of others tomorrow0 -

Perhaps this is evidence of my devious mind, but I wondered if those postcards could be from Santa, reminding her to be a good girl and congratulating her for something she has done well recently, and promising to bring something she is currently bugging you for if she keeps it up? Perhaps it could become a yearly tradition to get a mid-year Santa postcard which reflects her latest interests and congratulates her on something she has done well. If she has a proper place to keep them like an album or scrap book, they shouldn't take up too much space or create clutter!
Or, if you don't like that idea, perhaps family / friends who live further away might also be happy to know of something simple and cheap they can send which she would treasure! Means that when she does see them next, she has a connection with them.
In terms of hoarding, I see tendencies in both myself and OH. We have been trying to do a little bit of de-cluttering around the edges while OH is 'temporarily unemployed'. You wouldn't notice the difference if you walked in to our flat today, but I can tell! We are off on holiday soon so probably won't get much more done before we go, but while we are away I will need to help her de-clutter the things she has left in her old bedroom at her parents' house! It has been almost 10 years since we moved to the UK, none of the clothes will fit any more, and most of the childhood clutter is not really needed either. We do manage a little each time we go, so now there is space for her parents to have re-decorated the room to use as a spare room, and a clear shelf in the cupboard for visitors - but they would love to have it even clearer! I may suggest the photo method for keeping the memories while getting rid of the physical things. I think she also finds it difficult to get rid of things which have an apparent 'intrinsic' value (especially at the moment with only 1 income), such as beautiful ballgowns which cost an awful lot to buy in the first place, but on ebay only seem to go for tens of pounds, if that! I do the same, but when I am in a decluttering mood I try to just force myself to get over it, even if it feels uncomfortable to do so.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
I have just started on the bedroom, by accident, sometimes it just happens like that and anyway I have thrown out 2 tins (theyll be useful for putting *stuff* in one day.........) 3 cardboard boxes *ditto* , and 3 "posh" carrier bags (MAC, La Senza and Bumble and Bumble) not sure why the heck I was keeping them anyhoo and a whole black binbag full of other stuff. Go me.
My DD now wants me to take her to the CS's this morning clothes shopping ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I will do it but I am going to be firm with myself. We are then coming back to sort the garden out and start planning our new pond. We had a huge pond in our old house and I miss it every day. We moved 5 1/2 years ago.
I think everyone is doing so well. I giggled about the flower catalogue- I have 4 children and the things they take a shine to and then scatter round the house are unbelievable!
Oh and Ive just remembered another thing I did- My MIL lives just over the road (Im sure you'll hear more about her as time passes) and she likes to bring things over and leave them at my house. SO the other day I packed her off with a plate, a mixing bowl, a small bowl, a cup, a tuppaware full of sugar and a huge tuppaware full of flour. *sweet smile* "Oh theses are yours, I thought you might have been wondering where they were"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
