What am I supposed to do with this degree thing? Paper hat?

  • I've got 9 GCSEs 4, A levels (the proper ones before AS Levels), a degree and an MSc. I am also 4 years out of university. They've served me to get a decent job that will give me good career progression. I'm glad I put in all the hard work and time; I would never discourage my children from going to university - so long as they were suitable for it and didn't want to do a mickey mouse degree.

oh look, 2 sides to a story. I've known what i wanted to do since i was 15 (it was biochemist). Ok, it's changed (eventually decided on geneticist, then computational biologist) but it's kept a bit of a vision in mind and given me focus.

    I'd highly recommend this website:

I wish the OP good luck, but she must focus her efforts if she is to get somewhere she wants to be

What jobs have you done, black-saturn?

OP - you might want to send a PM to skintchick; I believe she's a freelance writer or something, and she might be able to offer you some tips.

I won't discourage them from anything they want to do either. Just a bit sceptical as to what purpose a degree serves.

Was an office temp for a while, various office jobs, part time publicity officer in a back street theatre, waitressing, supermarket cashier and now work from home doing data input.

I got a degree in Publicity and Marketing which has served me no purpose whatever.

Why on earth did you do a degree like that with 7 A Levels at grade A?

I think my degree has allowed me to develop my knowledge of the world and has given me skills that will serve me well for life.

I must admit, that was my thought too. Did you do all your A-levels at school?

A degree does give you good skills such as thinking about problems and increases your learning skills to learn and develop your skills in the future.
