Sniping - has anyone lost out?

My first message, I'm nervous
Just wanted to add that I too hated snipers. But once you've been outbid in the last 3 seconds by some smart @rse, you tend to think if you can't beat 'em (and I couldn't) join 'em.
It's a case of the quick and the dead on ebay
However - please don't do what my older and not wiser brother does. He has a few too many, sees something he likes, and bids a silly amount on it. Assuming he will clearly outbid anyone else. The problem is, he has been caught out by someone with the same idea and had to pay a fortune. But that isn't the best bit.
It's happened more than once and he still does it
My best ebay tip is - choose a figure that genuinely is your final, final, top bid. Even if it went for 1p more, you wouldn't be cross. Then do not go over. After paying over £90 for a bottle of perfume, where I got a little caught up in beating another bidder, I learnt my lesson0 -
Binxy.....
I do so hope to see you and your brother bidding on all my auctions soon. The MSE Dictionary

The last bid showing on screen could have been, say, £21.00 but that bidder's proxy might have been £23.52 (£23 being their valuation, and the 52p being the bit extra to win at that price). You come along and decide you can afford more than the next increment of £1, so put in a proxy bid of £30-and-a-few-pence.
This drives the other person's bid to their max (£23.52), and slaps on the extra increment for you, mostly probably £1, so the winning bid becomes £24.52.
Yes?
Hi
I'll have to look at the history in "Items Not Won" lol, but I probably worded that wrong.
What I was trying to say was I always thought that the increments were the same, i.e. 6p (or is it 4p?) on something that's stuck at 99p. Then I thought it worked with increasing amounts as the bidding went up, being 20p, 50p, 1.00, and 5.00 etc.
But I was beaten on one item by 2p?
How would I have beaten that? By bidding earlier and by 1p more?0 -

I really don't see what all the fuss is about and why snipers get such a bad name?!!
I'll give you an example of why I don't like snipers, from a buyers point of view
I'd bid on a couple of items and was outbid in the last couple of seconds (again), by the same person. I wasn't that annoyed tbh, I just thought I hadn't bid enough. But when I looked at the person's feedback, (it was private btw so I had to look at feedback left for her), she'd swept the board. Cleared all but a couple of items, and only lost those by someone with a better programme maybe?
There's no point bidding when she's about. She's either too rich, or drunk, or both
It just puts me off bidding from the same seller now. Maybe it puts others off too? It's just that she seems to outbid people because she can (in most cases anyway lol).
But it's her money at the end of the day.0 -
nbt wrote:No, I was outbid with about 6 hours to go. Just wasn't too bothered about winning, at least not enough to go back an d up the bid
You obviously didn't want/need it and at least you didn't push the price up either0 -
mah_jong wrote:So... say .... the item is going for 185.00 at the me..... and I am prepared for a max around the 205 mark . So I type in 206.37 and it tells me I have to bid 210. No...too much....BUT if the winning bidder had only put in 205....would I not have had the edge if my bid was slightly earlier???
Any thoughts?
I think we're both confused about the same thing0 -

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH ..... She only outbids you because her bid is higher than yours ..... It's sooooooooooo simple..... No software, hardware, shareware or underwear for that matter can beat your bid if it is the highest bid.
It doesn't matter if the bid is a proxy, a manual snipe or an auto snipe from one of dozens of sites..... the highest bid wins ........................ AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It's higher than 99% of peoples
Just realised she's buying to sell the stuff. I'll be avoiding her auctions then lol

Yes that what I was trying to convey...... A slightly earlier bid with slightly higher price and it would have been yours /mine !!!! Some times its a penny or two
Yes it would have been yours !....I have won by a couple of pence before but not by leaving it to the last minute....more of putting my final bid in earlier and then watch the difference nibbled away. !!!!0
