If we all used AVG antivirus and activated the AVG "Do not track" add-on function would we still be identifiable as individual visitors?
Currently while on this site "Do not track" is telling me that it is blocking "Google Analytics".
The detail of which states:
1. Personal data collection: n/a
2. Non-Personal data collection: yes
3. Data sharing: yes
4. Data retention: n/a
Personally I won't stop using the forum before or until MSE make it difficult to use as we do now, but I have unsubscribed from the weekly Admail, sorry....E-mail, as I no longer trust it to be free from commercial interference or bias as it is or soon will be owned by a for-profit commercial company.
I don't blame Martin for selling, but I would have bought shares in MSE if they had been offered to the public, which would have been a preferable route to take from Joe Public's point of view I think.Never trust a financial institution.

BUT, once things like "google-ads" start appearing then the independance has gone - and I will be off too.
Of course, should someone manage to set-up a true community (or charity) site which cannot be sold off for profit then I could see people jumping ship far sooner.
Reposting due to an accident so may differ from original.....
If you look at the official announcement (the one MSC released to the stock exchange) you will see it refers to Google Analytics a lot I suspect Google adds are already here somewhere.
As I have posted elsewhere I think with a bit work there is an alternative already in existance.
Imutual is 90% owned by the users shares are issued for forum posting (and using the cashback) it just needs some willing volunteers to start to create it.
A new stand alone could be created but why rebuild if something is already part way there has a web presence and a staff that can work on it.
A co-operative of sorts there to enrich everyone or no one rather than make one individual mega rich from the troubles of the not so rich.I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.0 -

Well, I wish you well for your future. I just reckon once MS get there filthy hands on this site that it will change from helping people that are in need to exploiting them.
Like you said.. We have to wait and see. I do wish you well tho.
I have said what is needed to be said.

IMutial with Richard Yendall. I wont say anything but rpoints.com, people lost loads of money. umm personally I would run from that site!0 -
To be fair to Martin it sounds very much as though he wants to maybe follow the example of Bill Gates
Gates said he wanted to tackle disease when he decided to take a step back from Microsoft and that's what he has done.
Martin's cause is financial education which we sorely need if the country is going to get back on its feet and avoid repeating this cycle over and over.
Like you I'm a tad skeptical as to what will happen longer term but there's always the option of going elsewhere if things take a turn for the worse.
What's done is done folks and there's more to life quite frankly.Interests: PCs. servers, networks, mobiles and music (esp. trance)0 -

I dont think there is another site like this, Someone that helps so many people.. Of course not only him but the team behind MSE and of course the other members of this forum.
This is the reason I believe so many people are upset about the site being sold to a comparison site, You have a site that really helps people and a comparison site that is not really a comparison site but to sell there own products that CAN BE CHEAPER on another comparison site.0 -

Congratulations on the baby and best wishes to you and your family.
We've all potentially benefited from the existence of MSE and still may do in the future, whoever owns it from now on.
The above quote is the best I've read on here since the sale was announced.Never trust a financial institution.

Well done Martin it feels like you gamed us all and made everyone think you were doing everyone else a favour! Free advertising for your site via the BBC, etc. Not once saying your site recieved commissions (lots of). I wonder whether the staff who run the site will be getting any of the dough?
Well it will be more difficult for you to moan about Bankers bonuses etc when you've had one and to tell people how to scrimp and save. That will seem just plain patronising!
I admire your cleverness you are clearly an opportunist and a capitalist. If someone offered me £87m I would have took it! But I would share it round abit. I hope you do share some of the proceeds with the staff. Now that would be philanthropic, but that's up to you.
And I suppose your not the only one in the media who is a multi-millionaire being stern and saying how terrible austerity is...there are quite alot of high profile journalists in this position that's just plain annoying. The rich telling everyone how terrible it is being poor.
This genuinely troubles me its abit like being taken in by a cult leader? Has the work you've done (which you haven't done on your own) really warrant £87m. But I suppose that's Capitalism for you Supply and demand. Establishing market position. The owner owns the business.
It's actually quite funny. Good luck to you. Please do something good with the money. I hope you actually can do some good and do care, but human nature is a complex thing and sometimes there are unintended consequences. I don't like Money Supermarket after I had a bad experience with them. Personally I ditching the MSE e-mails and I'll start using MSE and a range of other sites.0
