How simple is it? No advert, no receipt. Prove it. Waynedance has the more sensible suggestion.

No advert, no receipt but money has changed hands for the car and what was fitted to the car at the time of sale is what was sold.
There is no need for the buyer to prove anything.

    How about something like tyres?
What if the seller called to state that he fitted new tyres a few weeks ago and that he meant to change them for worn (but still legal) ones before the sale but forgot to do this so he wants to do it now.

Or possibly the radio. Maybe the wrong one was fitted when the car was inspected and sold.

What if he did? It would be a different question to the one asked here then, and would be a different answer I would expect. How far do you want to go? Be a good way to shift the mother in law. She was sitting in the back when you saw it, she was there when you paid, sold as seen, she's yours now.

Why do you give in every time?

You've got the text message to prove the seller FORGOT to remove the tax from the car. That backs up your truthful statement that it was on the car when you bought it. Plus, I seriously doubt the seller would be prepared to lie that it wasn't anyway - and if they did it would be futile, because the OP has the tax so that proves it was on the car. The OP holds all the cards, but once again you're making out they are in a weak position when they're not.

The OP may choose to give in for an easy life (like you always do) - if he works with them, then fair enough. But he/she certainly doesn't have to, and OP came here to learn about rights.

I'd love to buy a car off you mikey, I bet I could get it for half what I originally paid what with you backing down to every unreasonable demand made.

Why are you out to try to act the internet hard man, and rob everyone you meet, if you can? I'd love to sell you a car, and show you how the world is, away from the internet. I could probably make an exception in your case, and sell you one I'd bought from a scrapper, for twice what I paid for it. Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't you admit you were landed with a dodgy bike a few weeks ago, but didn't have the guts to complain. But ok to lead from the back like usual?

No, it would be the same question just a different item.
"I bought a car and it had XXXXX fitted when I viewed it and it had the same XXXXX fitted when I paid and took ownership of the car. The seller is now stating that the XXXXX was not meant to be included"

Your views might get more respect if you actually came up with a sensible comparison and didn't try to prove your point by including something that:
A/ Was not part of the car.
B/ Could not be classed as part of the car.
C/ Could not legally be bought or sold.

Oh, sorry, I just thought if you were inventing totally absurd what if's, and another one wouldn't hurt. Let's make it taking the engine out, if you think that compares better to your scenario? Or maybe let's just stick to the op's question keep it on the tax?

Tell them to take a hike.

Work mate or not, they are trying to scam a few extra quid.

They didn't 'forget' to remove it, are you saying as work mate would
allow you to drive home without tax, and with no means to buy the tax
until such a time that they can be arsed to dig out the v5.

If they did genuinely did 'forget' then the subject would have came up, you
would have got the green slip there and then so you could trundle off
    to buy some tax.

But weren't you the first person to start mentioning items other than the tax, or are you the only poster who is allowed to use other items as examples?
Was it advertised with the tax? If not, they could argue the car was indeed sold as seen, but not including anything left in it by mistake. Or would you keep the childseats if they left them in by accident, or the cd in the cd player?

Quite correct, as you point out, items left in the car, not absurd scenarios where the seller starts to strip the car for parts, and replacing with rubbish.

    Handbags away ladies..

It comes down to what you would reasonably expect to be included
    within the sale.

A car sold with tax, you can reasonably expect that the car was sold
    with tax.

A car sold with the pet cat in the boot, wouldn't be so reasonable.
