My local Sainsbury's doesn't put things in a special area, apart from bakery items, the rest just stays where it is.

I think a lot depends on the local manager; I have two Waitrose stores near me and one puts stuff out quite early in the morning, the other does late morning, early afternoon.

Our local ASDA does have a special place for reductions and it is at the end of one of the chiller cabinets. We often check on a Saturday morning and although there are a lot of reductions the amount you save is very little and on meat often more than you would pay under their 3 for £10 offers. However our son and daughter-in-law were in at around 7pm last week and got some spectacular buys - a chicken for £1.00 and some rump steak for £2.00.

Somebody else I know goes to Sainsburys in the evening when they reduce the cream cakes.

On this evidence it looks as if evening is best for good reductions.

That thread is over two years old - more than enough time for retail policies to change.

The Tesco Express that has recently opened near me and is quite big actually, reduces throughout the day, by 10p or so, then in the late afternoon/evening they reduce everything again - normally at least 75% off the original price. I went in just now for some milk, and got loads as it was all just being reduced again, I got the timing spot on this time! They leave the slightly reduced items on the normal places on the shelves etc, then it all gets moved to one cabinet when it's reduced further.

Sainsburys near me don't tend to have such big reductions, but they only seem to reduce one, normally about 40% off.

Tesco's and Asda both seem to bunch their reduced stuff together in sections, ie. bread, chilled, tinned stuff, fruit & veg.
I find that if I call in straight after work (5.30pm) stuff is reduced but not always by very much. I think they wait til after people have had their dinner then reduce it by more. Wait til after 7 or so. Or chance it and go 15 mins before closing to get stuff for pennies. Although you run the risk of empty shelves too.... :p

    Apologies.

    THIS may help then.

The worst time of day to pick up reduced stuff is the after school rush as in ASDA the mums cluster round the chilled reduced bits (one by the fish, one by the dairy) and it's like a rugby scrum.

Every time I've bought reduced Morrisons fish lately it's been off :(

My local Sainsbury's reduces stuff where it is, my local Tesco Express after 8pm

    Waitrose:

Just got two punnets of grapes reduced to £1.29 each and with the buy two for £4 offer got them for £1.44 for two punnets.

Also got two punnets of peaches and two punnets of plums, both reduced to 99p per punnet and with a buy two for two pounds offer they paid me 4p to take them away! :j They all keep well too.

I've had 10p sandwiches, which has got to be cheaper than making your own. Perfectly okay frozen. I always look out for the multibuy reduced meats. You can get some real bargains there too. Bread is often drastically reduced as well. It's very much pot luck with what you get reduced.

Eta: Times for reductions that I know of are around 11am, around 2pm, around 3pm and I got the sandwiches around 7.15pm. Reductions can be in original place, in a section of the meat section marked "reduced to clear" or near the checkouts in a chiller for the big reductions.

I am trying to compile an article to buying reduced food and was wondering if anyone can refer me back to a thread or discussion regarding what times days supermarkets reduce foods.. where you would find shelves ie i know waitrose reduce around the store whereas sainsburys move their stuff to a reduced section

Any help would be appreciated and any great tips? Ie i never ever shop when hungry

What this thread proves is that each store manager operates their own policy - depending on size/type of store and their knowledge of what works best for them. So you cannot really say that "Waitrose does X - but Sainsburys does Y". You just have to go round round your local stores at various different times and see what is going on.
