Anyone know where I can get small tubes of toothpaste cheaply (to carry in my handbag)? I looked in Tesco today and they were 85p which seems expensive as the full sized Colgate was only £1.

I am now wondering if my daughter should have worn hers for more than 6 months. She did do as she was told but now the retainer won't go over her teeth. Maybe a little movement is normal.
Good luck i bet you can't wait for yours to be removed. I remember when my DD came home without her brace for the first time and her teeth had been cleaned and polished. They looked perfect.:D
P.S Don't forget to post a pic of your perfect teeth.
There's ALWAYS a bit of movement once retainers are dispensed with.
Everybody has lips, cheeks and a tongue. All these things put a little bit of force on the teeth, and the teeth form up in an arch that balances out the forces of the tongue pushing one way, and the lips and cheeks pulling the other.
This place isn't necessarily the same place that the orthodontist moved the teeth to!How to find a dentist.

just to update I had my first orthodontist appointment today. People are always quick to moan about the NHS but I was really impressed with the swift and friendly service :j
I've been referred to the anomolies clinic so that a suitable course of action can be decided upon. I will be treated as an NHS patient due to my adult teeth that failed to make an appearance - I'm not thrilled by the mention of implants or surgery, but if thats what it takes then it's got to be done. It's going to be a long road!know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Thanks for the update Pavlovs_dog!
The NHS has been wonderful with me, it took a long time to get them but everyone has been great and I've nearly done my time now! YAY!

Hi hoping someone here can point me in the right direction.
I was put on the waiting list for an NHS brace when I was about 10, never made it to the top of the list and when I hit 18 they took me off the list as I was too old to get a free brace on NHS. My dentist told me it'd be £6000 to go to a private orthodontist (I only need a brace on my top teeth so thought this was a bit much)!
I never got the brace because my parents didn't want to pay that much for it and being 18 I didn't have that kind of money!
My teeth just make me really depressed I hate them so much and as a result rarely smile and cover my mouth with my hand when I laugh/smile. It is also quite painful as it "pinches" the skin on my gums and hurts when I eat.
Speaking to the OH about it today as we were watching a makeover show on tv and he suggested I go to the doctors and tell them how much it is affecting me and thinks they will get me a NHS brace (that I would have to pay for).
I feel a bit silly going to a doctor about my teeth so it is worth it or will they just tell me to go to the dentists? Also how likely is it that they will offer me a brace on the nhs?
Also....a bit of internet research suggests that braces on the NHS are hundreds rather than thousands of pounds...any idea how true this is and what kind of price I am looking at? I am a student so money is an issue!0 -
It is your dentist you need to go and talk to.
Drs don't do anything to do with teeth, and get quite pigged off about it!How to find a dentist.

See my post here for recent cost.
My DD is 14 and didn't qualify for NHS this is despite her dentist having a record from a young age of the pain she suffered where her teeth were over crowded on the bottom.
She was too young to be influenced by me and she isn't a whinger but she was consistent about this pain in her gums where the teeth crossed. Dentist could find no other explaination than the overlapping teeth for the pain. We just had to manage it by applying Anbesol to her gum and giving her ibrofen when needed at night.
She was referred just before she had lost nearly all her first teeth (so she was 12) and they reviewed her 6 months later but even though one of the teeth at the bottom was so displaced that the orthodentist thought the best option was to remove it (else she would have had to lose 4 good teeth at the back) he said it just wasn't severe enough for NHS treatment and the pain issue didn't count in the assessment. It also didn't count that the gum had receded on the one tooth and it was virtually impossible to clean a group of 3 teeth properly due to the overcrowding (thus giving future problems).
We had to pay privately if we wanted them done as her bottom teeth were classed as cosmetic. We could have just had the bottom done and the orthodentist thought was quite in favour of this though he did admit top and bottom would get a better result. We went for top and bottom and are almost at the end now. He hopes to remove the brace from her lovely straight teeth in 12 weeks and then it's on to retainers. It's been worth every penny and I know she will thank us for it in the future.
There were payment plans available to make it affordable. We went for the 12 month 0% interest deal but we could have had other deals that varied between £50-90 per month but obviously over a longer time span.
Only the orthodentist can give you a realistic price but you will be looking at min. £2k probably. You can self refer to private orthodentist and I asked loads of people for opinions etc. and some were not at all happy with one in particular that I had been considering so do your research if you are paying for it.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Although you can go and see an orthodontist off your own back - I would advise doing it through your dentist.
Your dentist will know the more reliable ones, and also, give you an idea as to suitability before you waste a higher amount of money having an initial assessment with the orthodontist.
There are very few purely private orthodontists - most of them spend most of their time and earn most of their money doing NHS work. But most have their private work as well as more kids nowadays fall outside NHS criteria.
The dentist will also make sure your oral hygien is up to scratch before referring you as well - as again it would be expensive to have the initial assessment with the orthodontist and then be told that other things have to be sorted out before treatment can begin. How to find a dentist.
