I've just had mine fitted (fixed brace ceramic on top - will need metal on lower when top have moved) and hope it will be worth it. My orthodontist took loads of 'before' pics so we can see progress as well as measure it.

Oh, and I'm not a youngster - I'm in my 50s! I do feel a bit strange about and self conscious about it at the moment but I'm sure I'll learn to live with it.

(I'm studying today so haven't been in to work yet, which will be a big step).

  • I asked my daughter's orthodontist about adult braces (my daughter had a fixed metal brace upper and lower yesterday), he said the cost for metal is £1500, had a quick look at my teeth and said I would need a couple removed, so I would imagine that would be another charge from my dentist.

My daughter has woken up with ulcers today, poor thing, she's getting to grips with putting the wax on.

Would be interested to hear how much people here have paid for their adult braces.

I am 24 and had braces fitted 6 months ago now, one of the best things i have ever done! Apart from not getting them done when i was a teenager.

Mine is costing £2500, I have ceramic uppers and metal bottoms which makes me feel less self conscious.

I paid £100 for my intital consultation, then £400 when fitted and i pay £100 per month interest free too.

I had to have 4 teeth out at £44 so £11 per tooth and a couple of fillings before I started.

Its doesn't hurt at all, after the first few weeks i could eat pretty much anything again just a bit sore after adjustments, i only needed brace wax for a week or too, been lucky had no ulcers so far.
Now a SAHM trying to earn some spare pennies each month

I have paid about £3500 for a full course of treatment, including absolutely everything, for upper and lower braces. That included monthly consultations, moulds, the braces, all the wax and 'consumables' needed, three retainers (the braces came off before Xmas), etc, etc, etc. It does sound a lot but actually, when I started adding it all up - and comparing it to what you pay for your normal dental care (if you are private) - I didn't think it was bad value for money. My orthodontic surgery are fantastic and nothing is too much trouble. I paid monthly by standing order. Now that my braces are off, I still have appointments but these become less frequent over time. I didn't need teeth taken out.

PS Tell you daughter that the ulcer thing doesn't last for long and the wax really helps. You will end up swallowing some but it doesn't kill you and you will end up with wax in the carpet (mysteriously). Wait until she gets onto the elastics. I'm still finding them all over the place and haven't been using them for three months!

Mine is a similar cost, though I did get 10% for paying upfront. As my teeth are complicated (apparently the orthodontist has only seen two people with more severe overbite) and I need a lot of adjustments, I think this is reasonable.

I'm still getting used to wearing mine and in particular, eating. It's a bit of an enforced diet, as I've cut all snacks and sugary things (with the exception of yoghurt and softer fruits at meal times), so I'm expecting a new figure too!

    HI guys!

I've just had a letter from the dental hospital to say that my orthodontic referral is on March 16th. Just wondering what i can expect to happen at the appointment?

Probably just x-rays and pictures and impressions for models so that they can fully analyse the problem, and decide a treatment plan.

Probably some initial discussions with you about likely treatment options, timescales etc.

    Nothing too major yet!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

My first appointment was a detailed discussion and history taking (going through my notes from specialist dentist who had referred me). The options and requirements of wearing braces were described and I was given literature to read. I went back for a second appointment when a lot of photos and moulds were taken, and have just had the third to fit my first appliance.

None of it hurts which rather surprised me!

i had a referral to dental hospital last year,
told i have a two year wait.
have another referral appointment in two weeks as my dentist said its urgent, but i dont see why they would fit me in earlier,
i do hope though that the letter from dentist will help, as i really need help now,
THANKS to everyone who posts competitions. you are all :A.
