There will be many jealous people. R+ to the charity donations.
We should but emulate you.Fred Bloggs0 -
editorial code says nothing about charities which I believe has been an mse culture; so if that has been downplayed, then wouldn't the site ethos fundamentally change
the MSE charity was not that active, and expensive to run, someone published a link on another forum and I looked at the figures, although a lot of money is going to charity this time, it seems.0 -
..Weeeeeeeeeeeeeell if you started a site for £100 and a few years later were offered £87 million would you take it? This is the difference between the UK and the US where they celebrate success. He is also donating £10 million to charity and has set out in the deal that the site will not change its business model. My only worry is how is he going to split £25 mill into £85k chunks?......ed0

Get real. You sell. You can't dictate terms on what the business model will be going forward.
Yes, there is a load of envy/jealousy on here.
Myself? ML is a businessman. He hasn't ripped anyone off but has mad a decent profit from, ultimately, recirculating old news. Good luck to him.0 -
How terribly, terribly sad and churlish that people are being so foul to Martin Lewis...Yes, the forum contributors have been instrumental in building the forums to the level they are at and that much of the information on the site comes from those forums but without Martin Lewis there would be no forum for you to share that information!
I'm truly saddened by the jealous fair-weather fans. 10 years ago Martin had an idea which he put into action and has now made an astounding amount of money...that's business. It's an amount of money most of us can never even dream of earning...I wonder how many years Martin DIDN'T make that amount of money? Do't you think 10 years of solid work and dedication deserves some sort of decent pay out?
Jealousy, it's so ugly. Can't you just be pleased for him? (You liked him when you though he was giving you something for free... remember) We don't even know how this is going to change the site.
(and before anyone says "oohhh a newbie sticking up for Martin must work for him" My Other profile is Morty_007...sadly I have lost the email address and password so I can't access it or I would proudly post this as my longer term profile)0 -
... Less like school, more grownup!!!!
Hahahahaha! Because of course everyone is being SO grown up about this!0 -
All About Forums looks really good. Looks a lot like MSE so you'll feel at home very quiclKy.
Just sayin!Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.0 -
ML did not just sell off the site, the site itself was just an independent comparison site with no affiliates, one of thousands available. ML sold its members, NONE of us agreed to be sold to MS but ML decided we were commodity.
This site was always bigger than ML and a few geeks in a tower, it was community, a community that put MSE on the map. MS will find it impossible to get that community back, ML just isnt interested now, his loyalty to his community went the moment he signed that sheet of paper and he knows it. But it really isn't his problem anymore, hes a rich man now.
That he could sell MSE is not the issue, as anyone in his shoes would have done the same with those pound signs. That he could sell the community like this, in such a discrete and candid way, is what the majority of us will never get over.
I vow just one email from MS as a result of my contract with MSE, I will see as a breach of the T&C that we all signed up to. Enjoy your wealth Martin, just dont expect it to buy back your loyalty or indeed OUR loyalty.

Plus, the one thing that annoys me most is that
1. Most of the contributions came from the forum (not paid)
2. The idea that we were clicking on links to pay for the forum when in fact it was just lining already rich peoples pockets instead of getting cashback for myself. Thanks to everyone for the comp links

Of course this is a sell-out. Martin Lewis has cashed in this website and you can be assured that Commercialism not Consumerism will be the direction of the site from now on.
87 million pounds does not get paid for nothing. Moneysupermarket will want a return and this will be from promotions on the site paying for click-throughs. Simple as that.
Mark my words, there will be censorship on these forums if one of you and me, the great unwashed, should post a negative comment about one of Moneysupermarket's promoted products.
I really find it amusing that Martin Lewis will be banging on about saving money when he has absolutely no reason to have an interest in moneysaving.
I don't blame ML for grabbing the cash, I just feel that he should have handed the site over, deleted his name from the site and removed himself completely from the editorial content. This site is no longer what it started out to be.
I note that the picture of ML on the front page has not yet been altered showing him flashing wads of cash, wearing a rop hat and smoking a huge cigar like he does with his Easter bunny ears at easter, etc.0 -

1. personally I don't agree, and even if it was so, ML made it very clear that he could do whatever he wanted with your posts (copyright belonged to him). Personally I feel it was a win-win situation as far as the forum was concerned, we posted, we benefited from the information on the forum, the copyright was clearly Martin's and he used the info as he pleased. If you were not happy nobody forced you to post.
2. this is were I really have a problem. We were led to believe that skimlinks were needed to cover the huge costs to maintain the site, infrastructure and big legal bills when the big boys objected to what was said about them. I would have not objected even if I knew that ML was making lots of money, he provided a service that I was happy to use and pay through links. But he was telling us that the money was covering expenses not that he was making millions, probably because, like other people have said, nobody trusts a millionaire giving you advice on how to save money, and would have questioned his motivations (thus effecting the value of the brand and his income).
I'm not even bothered that he made lots of money selling to MS, but it's the fact that he's still trying to pull the wool over our eyes pretending that he will be in charge and the site will keep their independence, while MS are a bit more upfront about their objectives
PS some people are questioning the impartiality of the advice he was giving even before, putting his profit before users' interests, but I've not seen any real evidence about this, it would be a huge disappointment if that was the case.0
