It was pretty obvious once the Relationships thread was allowed to become the Jeremy Kyle Show, that something was afoot, as this was clearly nothing about community or moneysaving but everything about sensationalism to get more traffic to the site, possibly to attract overseas traffic who would normally have no interest in UK-based ISAs etc

Yes a coop would have been nice - I joined The Mutual Net in the early days in the hope of some such thing on the internet - how do we go about setting one up?

Some people complain that the site will become too heavily moderated, while some people complain that the site was not moderated enough.
    They can't win can they?
Martin allowed a great deal of freedom on the board (although I can't say if there was censorship in areas that effected his pockets directly, I've not noticed it but I was not looking).

I think this forum was unique, the breadth of topics was unseen anywhere else. There is very little that is not covered, and however silly your question/problem, someone will try to help.
That's a STRENGTH, not a weakness of this forum. If people were not interested in a topic they just stayed out of it.

It is not that hard to start up a new forum. If some of us group together we could start something. Anyone interested PM me.

You are correct when you say it is easy to start up a new forum, however it is very difficult to make a forum busy active and interesting so that people participate regularly. MSE forum is a rare beast as forums go, it's busy and active because people spend time since there is always something going on and if one posts a question or comment there is usually a reply quite quickly.

Thousands of forums are started but very few become as busy and successful as MSE, many could be good forums but end up as dead as a dodo!

I am not as long term a member as some on the site who have been here for years and posted tens of thousands of posts but it does amaze me how suddenly people who have never posted feel the urge to come out in support.

So lets set the record straight. ML started the forum but he did not give all the help and advice. You did! Not just about consumer rights but some real every day issues from domestic violence to mental health. Over the last year or so I have slowly been drawn in it is not just a forum for money saving but in many cases a way of people talking and keeping in touch. It has a real social aspect. You have helps millions of people in not only financial but real emotional problems.

Money super market based in Chester where one of the first comparison websites. They do not make or sell anything. Instead providers pay every time someone clicks a link to their site.

87 millions is a huge amount of money so they as a commercial business will want their money back and then some. This will be funded by adverts links and in the end you!

Am I jealous of ML for 87 million in the bank? No I am just saddened that he he sold a resource so quickly. He sold you and your expertise. He sold the fact that real people wanted to help and make a difference. No matter what time of the day or night people like you and I wanted to reach out and make a difference.

The arguments have been put as admin and server costs. Dedicated national servers and a team of people do not cost 16 millions or 87 million.

    No sorry I feel duped.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

There will be many jealous people. R+ to the charity donations.

How terribly, terribly sad and churlish that people are being so foul to Martin Lewis...Yes, the forum contributors have been instrumental in building the forums to the level they are at and that much of the information on the site comes from those forums but without Martin Lewis there would be no forum for you to share that information!

I'm truly saddened by the jealous fair-weather fans. 10 years ago Martin had an idea which he put into action and has now made an astounding amount of money...that's business. It's an amount of money most of us can never even dream of earning...I wonder how many years Martin DIDN'T make that amount of money? Do't you think 10 years of solid work and dedication deserves some sort of decent pay out?

Jealousy, it's so ugly. Can't you just be pleased for him? (You liked him when you though he was giving you something for free... remember) We don't even know how this is going to change the site.

(and before anyone says "oohhh a newbie sticking up for Martin must work for him" My Other profile is Morty_007...sadly I have lost the email address and password so I can't access it or I would proudly post this as my longer term profile)

I have no problem with people posting how they feel about this situation but the amount of posts like the one I've quoted is ridiculous.

I kinda hope all of you that are so fed up with this sell off and feel the need to post nasty or biatchy comments like the one above, do sod off elsewhere. You'll not be missed.

  • Just posted similar on another thread - but maybe more will see it here. Surely MSE could have been floated? Newsletter recipients & forum members could all have had the chance to own a little bit of the site - & it could have remained independent. Far more in the spirit of MSE surely, but maybe would have cost more to set up?

Anyone know if this was considered?

the MSE charity was not that active, and expensive to run, someone published a link on another forum and I looked at the figures, although a lot of money is going to charity this time, it seems.
Sorry terra_ferma, didn't mean to ignore your reply, I catch up with the last page always on long threads and seem to miss out posts in between. I didn't mean the MSE charity; MSE charity is Martin's charity for a specific purpose of sponsoring deserving students or apprencticeships or something like that, I forgot. By charity I meant, this site always set aside a chunk of the revenue towards charities, you could say that he gave charities on everyones behalf. Someone in the middel of a conversation actually suggested that moneysuprmarket might or might not have unwittingly bought martin's conscience but it is something I thought would be seen on the editorial code if they needed to retain control over charity contributions. But then it is all too overwhelming to sink in, at least for me.
