The problem is, MSE was never a pure charity case - it existed to further Martin's ambitions (wherever they lay) - and the way to achieve that was to create the sense of community, championing the disadvantaged, BUT (and this is where I find it difficult to feel undisputed happiness of him) it also made tens of millions of pounds a year from exploiting that sense of community, belonging and in some cases sheer desperation of people who were floundering financially.

The figures don't bear that out.
In the last year MSE generated income from 39 million users and sent out newsletters to 5 million people whereas it has barely 1 million forum members.0 -

Funny. I just subscribed to Which yesterday. I'd rather pay for real independent advice that get pretend "independent" advice I've decided.
Maybe in the future the site will be better as we will be able to say what we like about ML and the MSE team because they won't own it any more?0 -
Which is a complete waste of money. Not the moneysaving thing to do..Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0

I think it's great. Just bought me a really good tumble drier.....ordered it yesterday arrived this morning...it's brilliant and without Which I probably would have bought a completely different model, so I'm more than happy already.0 -

Sorry, I should've been clearer when I referred to 'community' I didn't just mean the people who contribute on the Forum. I meant the whole picture - those who visit, click and don't write or post anything as well as Forum members.

Been following this thread for the last 24 hours now. I don't post on the forum but I do read it pretty much everyday and I must say I agree with most of the people here. I was too shocked and saddened to hear the news yesterday.
While I have lost a large amount of respect for Martin and MSE I will still keep checking the site / forum to see what's new etc. But sorry to say I don't think it will ever be the same again on here.0 -
Interesting link and related discussion thread from 2007:

Think it was obvious way back then that Martin was more than happy with the revenue generated and the potential for that to increase. Fair play to him, it's all there for the reading and (for those that wished to) questioning but you can see from the two page thread, there wasn't much of that done.
