I'm guessing here, but it may well be that some financial products were only available affiliate wise through MS. Most certainly the number of financial products for affiliate promotion dropped dramatically at credit crunch time - either the products weren't available or they restricted who they worked with (FSA regs another factor on that one).

If financials offered good affiliate deals to MS and their partners then it makes sense that MSE would use them over other affiliate networks (DGM for example went under) or perhaps spend time doing their own deals.

But as above - only a guess - but based on what I think as a siteowner.

    Jason

Pretty much spot on, MS are a big aggregator of finance information from many providers who pay them referral fees. in turn MS will pay other websites owners to direct traffic into them to increase their revenue from those many providers.

I've been in the internet marketing game for a few years now, along with a few other fingers in other pies, and although I've looked at the financial niche, I never got into it. What I did see though was the payout levels for smaller affiliates like myself. For example, get somebody to sign up to a credit card, typical payout is £50 per user. Get someone to switch utility companies, and the payout per user is closer to £100. Get someone to sign up for a free credit check, £35. A new mobile phone contract, that's typically £75 referral payout.

For a utility company to pay that much per new customer, they must be certain of getting a return on investment from the affiliate that pay out.

It's a huge money-spinner, but even though I may not be preaching what I practice, I can only see that the more people taking a cut out of all of these sign-up referral fees is going to cost us consumers more in the long run.

Indeed so. I'm afraid that anyone who believed Martin was doing anything from the goodness of his heart was sadly misled.

I don't expect any public figures, such as Martin, to do things from the goodness of their heart.

On the other hand, I don't expect them to make such vast sums of money out of the people they interact with either.

He's kept everyone in the dark for many years on the level of comfort this site has provided him with, and now it's out in the open.

Frankly anyone who takes this site seriously any more is deluded.

Lots of these type posts from people who have have an account with MSE for a long time, but have not helped the community, nor have anything useful to say now.

I've hesitated to say it, but alot of these people are obviously plants, giving the newpapers something to say.

And something else presumably......... if you weren't part of the MSE community, ie, you didn't give advice, or discuss things, you have nothing to complain about, so go back to the hole you were in before.

It's ridiculous, you have people complaining about the loss of the community when they were never a part of it to begin with.

I dare say many of these posts will end up in tomorrows papers as a cross section of MSE contributors.

I joined this site in 2004( One of the very few people who did ) after listening to you Martin on radio 2 .. Jeremy Vine :)

You came over as passionate and considerate & even answered my PMS to you.:)

I've watched people come and go and seen this site grow into a fantastic place with so much "free advice " from the furum users .

Solicitors /dentists./mortgage advisor's and even genuine Estate agents .:D

The posts On DFW by Tixy who gives so much advice and goes unrecognized .

I would like to say " if it ain't broke , don't fix it" .

Many people subscribe to this site in the knowledge that you want to help.

We need MSE to be as it was when I joined .. If not if not . I'll jump ship as so many other users have said .

Firstly your objection to people posting their opinions without a huge post count tells us alot about you as a person, And this coupled with your bizarre paranoid concept that opinions that don't match yours are actually undercover journalists from the British media, is bordering on psychotic.

Fling open those curtains, turn off the PC and get yourself out into the sunshine and meet some real human people.

  • Not a regular poster by any means, but I have referred to the site for the past 5 years.

First of all I would like to thank Martin and the MSE staff for all their hard work. Their efforts have guided me through reclaiming thousands over the years.

Like many I don't like the news. I still trust Martin, he's seldomly let us down and I have no reason not to continue to. My only real criticism is with his statement when he says "This is great news for MoneySavingExpert.com and its users." Please don't pretend this is the case when plainly it isn't. The manner in which the news has been received is indicative of that. The website has lost that which made it unique and credible - it's independence and for a princely sum to boot. It has been tarnished and the announcement is likely the death knell for a website many have grown to implicitly trust.

Trust counts for something though and Martin at the very least should, I feel be afforded the opportunity to prove the doubters wrong. I'll make a judgement over time. The man has done a lot of good and retains my admiration for his work, even if it is the end of MSE as we know it.

I thought it was June 1st, not April this news came out?!

To me the life and soul of this site was Martin Lewis.

It probably is if you get to stick your banner ads on it, and advertise your services. This is one of the most popular sites on the web.
