If I was Martin any pangs of guilt would have gotten a lot weaker after reading some of the spiteful nonsense on here. As dubious as I am about the site being sold I can still appreciate the work Martin has done. He doesn't owe the sites users anything and those who think he does should get over the entitlement complex and jealousy.

Also "if editorial guidelines broken - I will leave". Therefore when MoneySupermarket want to turn this into cash the only thing they have to do is tell Martin to clear off.
    That'll show 'em.

He just said he is going to be more consumer champion in media and have more help on here so he can do that

Consumer champion with multi-million pound shareholding in MoneySupermarket? How will that work then?

This reminds me of the owners of Innocent, makers of fruit juices and smoothies, selling most of thier shares to Coca Cola.

To many, Coca Cola was the opposite of what Innocent claimed they stood for:

    Creating healthy products

    Having an positive environmental message

Selling themselves to Coca Cola made many think Inncocent had 'sold out' at the time.

As sme have said, we'll have to wait and see. However, things can move so fast so who knows who moneysupermarket may be acquired by in 2, 3 or 5 years time.

Just heard Martin Lewis in BBS R5L. His only interview on the subject. He has stated that moneysupermarket will not be able to use MSE's database to send them offers / promotions.

    From the site's privacy policy:

We do collect your e-mail address when you register to receive Martin's Money Tips email. We do not share your e-mail address with 3rd parties and your e-mail address will never be sold onto a 3rd party.

I presume that means that our email addresses will not have been sold to MS as part of this deal?

I certainly hope you're right, some clarification is needed. Over to MSE!!

but it's frightening to note that we have all put information about our personal situation on here and they are being sold to the highest bidder, not comfortable with this, I for one will be very careful about what I post from now on.

Doesn't look like I'll be visiting often after Autumn, sad really:(

I'm really disappointed, but I can't blame him.

I've read through all the details, so I don't say this as a media influenced point of view.

I trust this website, and although it has its bad points - bit cluttered, some extraordinarily pious users, etc, I enjoy it.
It's probably the only place in my my day to day life that I come and don't feel like there may be a slight agenda - hell I feel there might be a slight commercial agenda at my kids schools, sometimes!
There 'must' be something in it for Money supermarket. They aren't doing it out of benevolence.
I've never known anything like this to ever end up totally independent, no matter what Martin says, he needs to remember the adage that he tells people himself "If something looks too good to be true, it probably is"
What do we think went on here...
"Hi Mr Lewis, we'd like to buy your site, but really, only so we can help people and give money to charity, nothing else. Have some millions"

    Nope.
I also don't buy the whole thing about investing more people to run the thing. That will not happen. Businesses like this quote economies of scale, then reduce, reduce, reduce.
But before the fan boys and girls start on me, I'll say it again - I don't blame him, I'd have done the same, but you just hope that sometimes, you've found someone who can't be bought, but then you learn the ways of the world!

I did a search for car insurance on Moneysupermarket a couple of years ago to obtain the chapest quote. I know this is partly my own fault for not spending endless time reading the sites terms and conditions.

But every year since then and just before my renewal date they authorise at least 6 different insurance companies to search my credit file and obtain all my personal information.

I have written to them and emailed them. I even have a reference number from them in there email reply assuring me my details have been removed from there system and it would not happen again.

    But it does!!!

    ... money talks! :money:

I only ever thought this website (helpful though it is) was a vehicle to get Martin famous.

This was reinforced when I stumbled on him presenting some BBC children's tosh (nothing to do with money saving) in the early hours of the morning many many years ago.
Next post follows in a moment ...
