Evening all
Had quiet a productive day, got all our photo's that had been laying in the loft and the photo albums i've brought when they,ve been on cheap or greatly greatly reduced and now have all our friends and family assorted events in albums so when i want to find them they are easy to find and safe. I did find that i was hording many blurry, headless and duplicated photo's which have all now gone to the bin. Budget wise i have spent £11.10 at the gym on a treat breakfast naughty but nice....

Hi everyone,
Went to Lidl yesterday and spent £37 on basics. DD and DH turned their noses up as they wandered around but agreed that it does cost less than going to the big supermarkets. Stocked up on fruit juice and cartons for school as they are such good value.
Still sticking to the meal plan most days or swapping meals around if we have something on. Tonight we had some lovely pork chops from the butcher coated in stuffing mix and fried. Delicious with roast pots and veg. I threw a few fairy cakes in while the oven was on but now I've run out of cake cases because I've been doing so much baking! Can't actually remember the last time I bought any cakes from a shop.
Out of our £325 budget for the month we have £157 left. I think my next shop will be on line with a delivery for next Sunday or Monday. Then there will only be 10 days to go til the end of the challenge.
Keep posting everyone. I love reading how everyone is getting on and getting ideas.

Going to make 2 small cakes with the chocolate sponge mix, then add chocolate spread on one cake, put second cake on top.
Melt white and plain chocolate, then spread on baking trays. When hardend, i cut then into shapes of any kind. Then spread top of cake with a frosting and add chocolate cakes on/ around cake.
Voila, a very nice hm birthday cake.:D

Help help. I know this is the grocery thread...but you're all my trusted friends-my DDs lovely lilac and white duvet cover has come out pale green and lilac and she is not a happy bunny, any idea how or if I can rectify this without buying her a new one please??? thanks in anticipation
Steralising fluid removes colour from things. Ive made up a solution of fluid and water and using a cloth dabbed all over the area i wanted to remove the colour from - time consuming but effective. Dont let it touch anything else though as it will make the lilac white as well !!"With no money you start to discover your own inner resource" GK Chesterton2 adults, 3 children0 -
No spend here since Thursday. We had HM curry, rice and HM naan bread tonight for tea. I've also made a chocolate sponge, some fairy cakes and some scones. These will be used for packed lunches. Really pleased with the baking as I've never made time to do it before and everyone is commenting on how they are enjoying the cakes. We had tinned soup for lunch today for the first time in ages and it tasted so salty, so I think we will stick with the HM soup now. Does anyone have a recipe for pea and ham soup. Got some bacon bits that need to be used up, so I thought I would give that a go.
Great to read some really positive posts tonight. We've increased our standing order to our savings account today, so we are starting to notice the difference as well:o0 -

Now I may be entering dangerous territory here, but I notice that some members do not indicate where they come from. It helps to compare costs from region to region and within regions. It isn't a requirement I know, but surely it can't hurt to post which County one comes from, can it?

I think you have a valid point FM. Also there can be a vast difference in whether we're townies or rustics! I live in the country and when my dd and dsil lived in London they would always fill up with petrol here because its such a lot cheaper. However, the other side of the coin is that I'm very limited as to where I can shop. Nearest town (Supermarket etc) is about an hour's bus ride away. No yellow stickers for me I'm afraid!
I have one tesco delivery a month and then shop locally for fruit and veg which is expensive and a limited choice. Occasionally I long for city life again - several supermarkets within a 10 minutes drive!... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Hi Galactic Green
funny you should ask about pea and ham soup - I wanted to make some on Thursday and couldn't find a recipe, so I made one up!:o ( a la Mrs Mccawber!)
I chopped an onion and "sweated" it in a pan with about an ounce of butter for 5 minutes.
added 2 tins marrowfat peas (drained), a pint of chicken stock (not HM I'm afraid - OXO, sorry) and some pepper - no salt as I have to watch my salt intake due to blood pressure.
Simmered for approx 45 minutes until the peas were really soft (practically disentegrated!). Then I shoved it in the liquidiser until it was smooth. I put it back in the pan, added some bits of ham, chopped up small, and reheated it. Served it to DH for lunch with some HM bread and he loved it! I was well chuffed! (I managed to save a small portion for the freezer, which I will have for lunch one day in the week, but don't tell, 'Cos OH was looking for more and I said there wasn't any. Shhhhhh!)
I know it's not a "proper" recipe but it was yummy!

Hi folks! It has taken me over an hour to catch up with all the posts as I have been so busy all week that I haven’t had time to keep up. Anyway- I am still on target I think. I only spent £46-20 this week on food and toiletries, and I had DD1 home for the weekend and MIL came to lunch today. Next weekend we have DD2 and her BF for the weekend, so that might cost a bit more but I have almost £121 to last to 28th Feb so I am still cautiously optimistic!
One of the best bargains I got in Sainsbury’s for this week was a special offer on eggs – I got 12 free range large eggs for £1.92 – only 11p more than they were charging for 6 with the same use by date! I guess they over-ordered for Pancake Day!
Sorry it was several pages ago that someone asked for a homemade custard recipe but here goes:
1egg yolk
1heaped tablespoon cornflour
1-2 tablespoons of sugar
3/4pt milk
Mix the egg yolk with the sugar and cornflour and about 1 tablespoon of the milk. Meanwhile heat the rest of the milk until just coming up to the boil. Stir into the egg mix and then return to a gentle heat, stirring all the time until thickened. I usually do it in the microwave to avoid having to stir all the time and it usually takes about 2 or 3 minutes. It works best if you use semi-skimmed or full fat milk but I have used skimmed milk too. You can freeze the unused egg white to make meringues later. This custard will look pale compared to stuff made with custard powder but tastes great.
Another variation which uses the whites of the eggs too is this:
2 eggs separated
2oz butter
2oz caster sugar and 4oz more for the meringue
2oz cornflour
1 pint of creamy milk
Cream the butter and the sugar together and add the egg yolks and cornflour with a little of the milk to make a smooth mix. Heat the rest of the milk as above and then add to the creamed mixture. Return to heat until thickened. Meanwhile grease a shallow oven proof dish (I usually use an oval one about 27x18 cm) and pour the custard in – this one is a thicker mix than the one above. While the custard cools slightly make the meringue by whisking the egg whites with the rest of the caster sugar. When really thick and in peaks pour over the custard and pop in the oven 180C gas mark 4 until golden and crisp on top – about 10 mins I think. Serve warm on its own or with stewed apples. Yum! Warning – don’t make this if you are trying to lose weight!
Good luck everyone especially all you newbies.0
