I've just made a cake using up my manky old bananas that I would normally throw away.

Mash 4 medium ripe bananas with 4tbsp honey (I didn't have honey so used 2 tbsp golden syrup) & lemon juice. Add 4oz marg and mash with potato masher. Don't worry if it looks lumpy and horrible. Add 8oz SR flour, 4oz caster sugar, 2 eggs and 2oz sultanas (I used raisins instead - no sultanas). Pour into loaf tin and bake for 1 hour 15 mins @ Gas 4.

It looks and smells really nice, so I've got myself a nice cheap cake, yay!! :T If it's nasty I'll let you know!!

I've just made a Banana Loaf (with DS) but it is definitely more a loaf than a cake. The ingredients were very similar to yours.

4 bananas (yes, mine were manky too and were the cause of the loaf in the 1st place), 2oz caster sugar, 2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1 oz marg, 1 egg, 8oz SR flour, 1/2 tsp bicarb soda). Baked for 1 hr 30 mins @ gas 5.

When cold slice and spread with butter (although butter not essential as it tastes good without it).

Total cost of loaf (not including the gas) was 72p, and will be used in packed lunches and after school snacks before tea.

Perhaps you could let me know if yours is a more 'cakey' texture?

Went crazy today on coffee! :D:D:D

Tesco had Douwe Egbert (The only one we like) 100g on offer for half price.
There where also vouchers with the jars (50p off), so I ended up spending £1.18 each for 12 jars (Bought some at higher price first, then found out about the voucher)! :D

This should last us a long long while! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
I wish Germany had a website like moneysavingexpert!
  • Popped into Mr T for milk (always fatal) and spent £3.85, extra was on veg so don't feel as bad as if it was on chocolate. Did feel very guilty walking through Tesco doors as meant to be waiting for big shop with list!

Meal planning not going so well, but we're having stir-fry tomorrrow (as have veg in freezer) and in freezer we have chicken drumsticks which I stocked up on when they were reduced. Will be scouting around for some recipes to do with those as DH doesn't actually like meat on the bone.

Off to update signature and spending diary.com.

    Lil_Me I'm on the list but my budget isn't - I'm down for £350. Thank you x

Wonder what it is that happens to bananas on a Sunday that makes them go manky? Perhaps it's the thought of another week on the horizon.

:D I'm not on the GC list either Lil_Me - my first month too:T

So far I've spent £32.05 mainly in Lidl yesterday, I also went to Mr Ts today but got out only £2.55 lighter - reduced lemon sole and chicken fillet.

I've been reading the Storecupboard Challenge thread and realise that I have the makings of all the next weeks meals in the house already so when I call in at Asda tomorrow all I hope to be buying is bread flour, milk and moz cheese for pizzas. I doubt I will get away with it but I live in hope.

I buy the Empire movie mag every month but I have promised myself I will only buy it if I have the money is still in my purse left over on Friday morning.

I've only been registered on MSE for about a week, thanks to everyone for being here just when I needed you:A

I use a plain soya yogurt as a starter (1 teaspoon) mixed with 1 litre carton of Soya milk (I use Alpro). The Easiyo kit means all you have to do is put boiling water in the outer casing, then put in your litre inner casing with milk and starter mixed together, and leave for 8 hours or so, I tend to do it overnight and then put the litre of yogurt into the fridge and use when required.

With Easiyo you get these screw-top litre canisters, as well as small ones you can fill and take in your lunch box. You can find these kits all over the place...Ebay, Lakeland (Plastics as was), James Graves and even my local cook shop. It is quick and easy, and if you regularly use soya yoghurt, you save soooo much, so you make back the money you payout in the beginning.

I am asthmatic and take soya as it helps keep down the build up of catarrh. I don't eat any other yogurts, but I love my home-made ones! If you want to flavour the plain ones you make (don't worry...soya ones are a bit "grey" in colour!), you can add jams, fresh fruit etc.

    Hope this helps.

Thankyou so much am going to have a go at these ds2's yogs are sooo expensive it's ridiculous! Ds1 has supermarket value from frais 45p for 6 and ds 2's are £1.40 for 4!!!
Also my mum has got an old but fully functional yogurt maker she's going to give us so there'll be no outlay at all!!

Thanks for all your advice re cutting my home made bread. I'll try leaving it til the morning and will dig out our old electric carving knife. I'm going to look out for one of those bread slicers when the boot sales start again in the spring.

Tonight I have made my first ever chicken stock using the chicken carcass! Now I think I have to wait for it to go cold to scrape off the fat but after that I'm not sure what to do with it! How do I turn it into soup? I do have a slow cooker.

I've looked at the rubber chicken thread and got a lot of ideas including a chicken and vegetable pie, but I'd really like to have a go at a MILD curry. Has anyone got a nice simple curry recipe that the whole family will eat? I've got a pint of stock and just under a pound of cooked chicken. I have a few herbs and spices including mild curry powder but the shops round here have limited choice so the ingredients need ot be pretty basic.

Also saw an idea for chicken pasta bake. Anyone know how to make it?

    I'm sure there's a recipe thread somewhere but I can't find it!

    Thanks
