MrsMcCawber Today I boiled a bacon joint in the slow cooker, and then I made the your soup recipe out of the stock, I have to say, it is georgeous. :T
It is now in the freezer for hubby to take to work.

Also, the chilli is on for tomorrow (SC). Hubby made some rolls, he is going to let them rise till the morning, ready for breaky. He really loves making bread etc.

Spent another £7.50 for pots from the farmer and £1.05 for eggs. The pots going to last ages.

Hubby is now away for two weeks this month. Even tough I planned the meals for the whole month, DS1 and I will be living of HM stuff out of the freezer the last week, to use everything up.:D
What was plant for that week, I will just move into March. One week less to worry about.:D

Hi there, only my second post. Am new to the board.
Well, I would like to join you all if you don't mind. There's me, hubbie and teenage son who plays lots of footie and eats like a horse. I reckon I could spend about £350 on food in a month as just nip into M & S as it's quick and easy. Also daughter comes home during Uni holidays so always spend more then. I am going to aim to spend about £250. I don't mind cooking at week-ends but really dislike coming home from work and cooking from scratch during week, so have been cooking and freezing using some of your many top tips! Thanks so much! x

  • Hi all, was wondering about having a bread maker, after reading all the posts, looked for one on ebay and they are a fortune, if I dont use it, however my mum got me a prima one form her local bootsale for £8 including a big bread recipes book, my son has wolfed down half the loaf already, and it actually came out really well.
This should help out loads, as we get through lots of bread and soreen, so will start making it myself, fresher and healthier!!!
Still using storecupboard stuff so only dinner money to come out of my £300 for the month.
  • Just spent AGES catching up with you all (having only just finished on the Jan thread). Page 23 already!

The relief at finally arriving in February meant that yesterday I spent £40 on food for the weekend. Not the best way to start the month  However as my aim for this month is to meal plan, so hopefully I can claw some of that back. Not being too harsh on self as some of that was pure cravings! Managed a NSD today.

Thanks to suggestions here, I've joined www.spendingdiary.com so am going to keep track of ALL our spending (currently GC just includes anything that is either food or I'm likely to buy in the supermarket).

We are going to try eating more veggie meals, however due to our little damp problem causing my fresh produce to go off very quickly, I don't like stocking up so am buying as needed. So no weekly market trips, rather individual supermarket dashes. My Xmas stockpiling has now dwindled so need to do a big Asda shop but will see how long I can manage by putting that off (will supplement with Aldi rather than Waitrose ;))

Have no idea how well we'll do this month but we'll keep trying!

Oh, going back to school dinners posts- ours are £1.75/day so £8.75/week. This includes drinks of either water or milkshake. Hadn't realised what a good deal we were getting compared with other comments!
  • I've just added a signature for the first time and it's not showing up on my posts. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

    Thank you x

Edit: sorry- it is now. Brain is definately addled!

    Hi all,

Spent €7 to-day on meat for a casserole, with loads of veg added, I reckon the whole meal cost about €12 but got about 15 portions so was very satisfied with that, will freeze portions tomorrow when it is cold.

IrishMom...glad that your money worked out ok...good to hear about your biodiesel luck too....thought that our beloved(?) minister for finance had slapped a tax on it to bring it up to the price of regular petrol and diesel...happy to know that it hasn't yet happened! Must investigate here although we are paying about €.20c than you for our petrol, our car is 6 years old so maybe too ancient.

    Good shopping to all

  • Spent £10.66 today in the dreaded Mr T's went with a budget of £10 so didn't do too badly. Hopefully I won't need to go that particular supermarket again for a couple of weeks as I hate it. £149.34 left for the rest of the month only 27 days to go!

  • hiya all, me & hubby are doing this together and have decided our challenge will not just include groceries but everything we spend apart from essential payments such as rent, ct and utilities.

last month we used the spending diary to log all spends and we overspent  but luckily we made enough on ebay to cover it.:T we have set up a diary in hubby's name to log all money made / saved either through, ebay, car boots, survey sites, money found, coupons used. (used £4.16 coupons and found a £1 at asda self scan)

we have checked out our direct debits and cancelled 2 non essential ones saving almost £20 a month. we have decided to sell our gas guzzler for a cheaper model as it uses a shocking amount of petrol:mad: .

    we will be:

    buying reduced to clear items

using up supplies in cupboards and freezer

    reading papers / magazines online

bulk cooking and freezing leftovers for lazy days

    only using cash

writing all the prices of everything we buy and checking if we have been overcharged and claiming our £2 gift card from asda or double the difference from tesco if we have.

i have also kept a word document of everything we have bought in january (food/toiletries & household) and what is carried over to the next month unopened.

taking advantage of special offers bulk buys when we can afford them only if it is something we use.

lil me can you please add us for £440 (total spend everything except direct debits) this is for me , OH, 2 teenage stepsons.

Okay, I admit there is no way I'm going to manage to read 23 pages! of this thread, as my internet time is rather limited at the moment, but I'm back in this month.

Overspent last month by about £20, and that was with a decent amount in the cupboards and freezer. I'm also accepting that I am less able to cook than I was last month, so this month my budget is £80, from 2nd-29th (that covers 2 paydays).
