Hey Gang....this month does seem to be dragging somewhat, & like many of you we're having BB troubles too. I was all set to shout at BT, but it's not only them is it?

Thanks for helping us keep on the right track MrsMc:T May I ask you---what are pork & celery popovers, turkey pastitio & schnitzel? I've heard of the latter, but no idea what it is:o

Also, this mysupermarket.thingie...do you order your groceries from them, or will it just compare prices for you? I'm a complete dunce at working out these sites---I'd love to get to grips with the good cash-back sites you folks use too:rolleyes:

The recipe for scottish toffee is just begging to be shared Mortgageffm....would you mind posting it for us? My No2 offspring is a fudge-ite of any description & I reckon this could be a winner;)

I'm still looking for your opinions on whether it's false economy to buy cheapie self-raising flour when you can use plain & baking powder, or the best flour to use for sponge-type cake baking.
Plus I bought 500ml of groundnut oil today as it was considerably cheaper at 67p than the closest priced olive oil. It's only to be used for the rare fried egg or to crisp HM potato wedges, & it's supposed to be of comparable health benefits too isn't it?

I've been picking up bits & pieces for easter & Mother's Day using ideas from Home made chocolate slabs , does anyone know how I can make this ?, & Finished baskets!! in particular over on Special Occasions thread if it's of any help.

My latest spends of £65:76 include a glut of yellow labels from an unintended food shop in sainsbugs & a stock-up from a local discount store. My month goes from 25th-24th so hopefully nothing significant will be needed before Monday morning & my Feb declaration.
MrsMc, my March budget will be £350 as usual.

  • Hi there Becky2 and welcome

There are only 2 of us and I'm aiming for a GC of £100 one month and £150 the next month (doing a bi-monthly big internet shop with all the storecupboard heavy stuff). Last year when I was getting started I think I probably averaged about £180-£200 a month or thereabouts which was a big improvement from the old days of at least £350 if not £450! My advice is to do a range to start with, with the lower amount being what you would love to manage and the upper amount being what you can't bear to go over :) Worked for me anyway.

Thanks Lil-me for all the work this month and well done MrsM for taking it on next month. I've not finished this month and barely thought about next month so can't post any totals or targets yet :)

Chardonnay - how are the lentils dirty? It has never ever occurred to me to wash them and I've just realised my total ignorance of what they are and how they are ...grown? Even if they are grown!!

Oh and sorry I'm not thanking at the mo, our internet is soooo slow I'd be here til morning, consider yourselves all thanked :)
  • emm i don't really know, only that my mum has always told me to wash them - with the orange lentils we use to make lentil soup, when you cover them with water and stir, the water goes very cloudy and they need a good few washes to get rid of the cloudiness.

When lentils are prepared, they are first inspected for damaged lentils, stones and other foreign matter. Then they are rinsed until the water runs through and comes out clear. Some prefer to soak the lentils for an extended time and discard the water. This removes substances that may cause indigestion.

    I always wash lentils too....
Only because when you soak them the water does end up murky.
So when I dont have time to soak them, I give them a good rinse.
  • a quick way to clean them without soaking is to cover them with water in a bowl then swish about - the water will go grey, then drain them, and repeat process until the water goes clear - this can be done in a few minutes.

  • NSD today:T

Spent £14.68 in Asda on Wednesday. I went for essential F&V, potatoes, bread flour and milk but got some bargains too, the good influence is starting to rub off.
A nice piece of stuffed Pork for £1.50 and some lamb mince for 80P!:j

I knew I'd be passing by Lidl on Thursday so bought Yoghurt and Tortellini from there, a grand total of £1.80 a good start to the last week of the month.

On the downside, the BM went on strike today so I might have to resort to buying bread at some point:eek: or give MrsM's tortilla recipe a try!

Lil-me thanks for orgainsing the list this month and thanks to MrsM for taking over.
With regards to Lidl, as well as F&V, I really like the yoghurts and cold meats.

When making Quesidillas, I put tortilla in lightly oiled frying pan, spread with salsa, add grated cheese and chopped up spring onion. Sandwich with another tortilla and turn over. Serve when cheese melts. I've been known to bung in other left over veg or meat.

Congratulations to everyone that's reached the end of February and good luck to those on the home straight.

well still having NSD's here, but thankgod its only a few more days till payday. This week has certainly made me realise where I waste money. Not having any is the way ahead :rotfl:

Its made me realise just how many times I pop to the shops and although I usually manage to stick to my budget it makes me wonder whether I'm still spending more than I need to:confused:

anyway my budget was £80 and Ive spent £32.65

and I still have 54p in my purse :rotfl:

maybe the car breaking has given me a bigger nudge towards being OS.

Well done to everyone who came in on/under budget. and hugs to those that didnt but remember every little helps;)

  • BigMummaf here is the receipe you wanted, we call it tablet (it's very sugary) but others call it scottish toffee. To me toffee should be chewy, but this isn't. We grew up with this being a once in a blue moon sweetie treat as our parents were too broke to buy us sweets!
    100g butter
    2lbs granulated sugar
1 small tin carnation milk, plus tin filled with fresh milk
Bung it all in a large pan and slowly dissolve , bring to boil and slowly boil for about 15mins (stir constantly) till soft ball stage is reached. Take off heat and beat really well, pour into a greased tray (swiss roll sort of size or a bit smaller) allow to cool and cut into small squares. My kids fight over who gets to sook the wooden spoon!
    Grippy is my middle name!
