My two boys love it too and DS1 makes it for them as its so easy. :)

I forgot to mention that the bacon or ham goes in with the garlic when we first cook it, or in the white sauce after its made. I buy the economy packs of bacon from morrison (making sure I get a one with some smoked bacon in). Its only 70p and would last you a month worth of carbonaras, quiches and soups.
Tescos does a similar priced pack but Morrisons always has nice rashers rather than huge chunks if you pick your pack. ;)
Thanks for that. We do get the cheap packs of bacon ,but must confess that one pack is equal to one lot of carbonara in our house-must be going wrong somewhere. When we make it we saute an onion (diced) add the bacon bits, cook it off a bit and add mushrooms and peppers-sometimes green beans/mangetout or whatever we have to hand to bulk it out. We cook some spaghetti in a separate pan (normally we buy a huge pack of cheapish spaghetti-and only use 4 cups full per meal) Then we mix the carbonara sauce with the meat etc, then add the drained spaghetti and mix it together and then serve-and that's an evening meal for 4 of us.
Any cheaper alternatives suggestions are greatly appreciated-thanks in anticipation.

    Hi BigMummaF

Schnitzle-probably spelt wrong :p is usually a pork escalop egg and bread crumbed and shallow fried, im going do it with turkey steaks, spread some mustard on 1 side and a slice of ham then egg n breadcrumb it and just use 1 tsp of oil...

The pop overs are like toad in the hole.. individual yorkies with a ball of minced pork, seasoning, celery and oats in the middle , but again i might ignore the celery and add onion and grated carrot :D

And Pastitsio is a Greek dish -usually made with beef... savoury mince on the bottom, macaroni over the top and then a white sauce and tomato slices over the top....mmmmmm

I have the recipes if you want them... and i have the cal counts and WW points for them too ;)

    Hi becky2 -here you go:-

    TURKEY PASTITSIO
    serves 4-6
    • 450g/1lb minced turkey
    • 1 large onion-finely chopped
    • 4tbs tomato puree
    • 250ml/8floz red wine or stock
    • 1tsp ground cinnamon
    • 300g/11oz macaroni
    • 300ml/ 1/2pt skimmed milk
    • 25g/1oz/2tbs sunflower marge
    • 25g/1oz 3tbs plain flour
    • 1tsp grated nutmeg
    • 2 tomatoes- sliced
    • 4tbs bread crumbs
    • seasoning
    1. preheat the oven to gas 7 -220c - 425f
    2. Dry fry the turkey and onions until browned
    3. add -red wine, tomato puree/stock, cinamon and seasoning -stir well then cover and simmer for 5 mins
    4. cook the macaroni until just tender -then drain
    5. layer the macaroni and meat in a wide ovenproof dish -i usually do sauce/macaroni/sauce/macaroni
    6. warm milk
    7. melt margerine in a pan, stir in flour and mix well, slowly add warmed milk and stir over a gentle heat until thickened and smooth (if it has any lumps in once thickened -just whallop it with a whisk :p )
    8. add nutmeg and seasoning
    9. pour over the pasta evenly
    10. arange tomato slices over top in lines and sprinkle over breadcrumbs
    11. bake for 30-35 mins until golden
I don't like cinnamon or nutmeg much -but it really does work in this ;)
I also bulk it out sometimes with the good old grated carrot, mushrooms and oats..which isn't authentic -but it tastes good :rotfl:

    hope you enjoy it :D

    Hi MRSMCAWBER!

Thank you so much for passing on the recipe for the turkey pastitsios. I shall let you know when I have made it, it wont be this weekend since payday is the end of next week so money is tight at the moment.

By the way, this probably sounds stupid, is macaroni a type of pasta?

My favourite recipe at the moment is spaghetti with tuna mixed with lemon & coriander houmus and a touch of ceasar dressing. If I don't eat that once a week at least I go mad. It's yummy, very filling and quick to prepare.

  • Another day, another update! Between Asda and Farmfoods I've spent another £7.92 mainly on eggs, milk, cold meat and mayo. I'm hopeful I'll only have to get some milk between now and Thurday!
