Just a quick note about freezing etc:

I have loads of pots made out of halved 2 litre milk cartons - I put the plastic bags inside those (you can turn the edges over the outside of the carton for filling) and then tied off with the excess air removed. You can then put rows of tubs in the freezer and pile them up if need be. ....

Excellent idea :T and so simple and cheap - I like cheap :D

I've used milk cartons (or pop bottles for funnels and a cut-down milk carton for a compost scoop when filling pots. I save one, thoroughly washed, for diluting my full cream milk. I'm sure there must be hundreds of other things you can use them for
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

They also serve as measuring jugs, as they are marked off in pints - glam kitchen utensils, or what? :D I need more ideas for empty milk cartons, although with the powdered milk scenario, I'll be down to one carton a week from now on :T

My husband made an igloo out of them as an architecture student!!

    I don't know!!!!!!

I did 2 fairly big tesco shops at the beginning of the month.. inc cereal etc. I buy milk and fruit and veg almost daily and meat top ups occasionally.. I really don't know why it is so low!! I do wonder if I am just cheap.. lol

I have now got totally empty cupboards.. bar a few tins of beans, tuna and fruit cocktail..

But that is working out at £11 per person a week!!!!!! We have a cooked meal every night and cereal and toast for breakfast.

My 3 year old is trying to eat the entire fridge contents on her own this afternoon though!!

Just remember something else about the cat who understood the word "fish". Years ago when she was still very young it was pork chops for dinner. My dad got up to answer the phone and the cat jumped up onto the table and ran across to the other side, on the way (without even missing a beat) she tried to grab the chop off his plate! She missed it, but it was funny to watch.

We can't have cats now because my DH is very allergic, but I do love them.

Irrelevant to GC I know! I need to work out my total so far and will update later.

LOL.. my mother was once eating a ham sandwich as in true cartoon style as she bit the bread the cat whipped the ham out of the sandwich.. he used to try scooping cornflakes out of her dish and off her spoon as well!!

Ome of mine eats hubbys porridge if he leaves it unattended.. I don't know if he has noticed the little tongue marks in it!! lol

Mine like cheese and peas too.. I think it is because they rhyme!!

My brother was making his sandwiches for school one day, using some pilchards which has been mashed on a plate ready for the rest of us to make ours. He showed our cat the plate! Needless to say there was nothing left for the rest of us!:rotfl:

Another cat we had was nosing around in a box of chocolates when my mum was choosing one. Mum told her sternly that she could pick one, so the one she stuck her nose on was hers. She gallantly chewed for ages - it was a hard caramel one! We had to eventually pull it off her teeth:rotfl:
  • Haven't had the chance to update sg until today and catch up on all the posts.

Having a better month than January and a even better week! Have only spent £3.18 :j . Finally realised that I don't need to buy any more tinned tomatoes/baked beans etc when I already have a cupboard full  . The freezer is also well stocked with HM chilli and curry (always make extra), so this week we've only needed milk.
May have to go and get a few basics tomorrow though.

    One week to go :D

  • Hiya

I'm still fairly new to the site but i've found this thread really interesting as I have no idea what my weekly / monthly shop is!

So I've added up what i've spent in the supermarkets and Januarys was £288  for 2 people, 1 dog and 2 cats - I'd love to spend £30 week but really don't think i'll stretch to that (I think DH may notice if his steak is replaced by Beans on Toast overnight :D ) So I think i'll try to reduce it bit by bit.

Feb so far I've spent £123 so with 10 days to go I think £52 should be do-able giving a total of £175.

    Wish me luck!
    :j Mortgage Free!! )
Generally trying to cut back where possible :j
  • Done really really BADLY this month - although DH has pointed out that before GC we'd have spent more so it's still an achievement - about to sort out budget on spreadsheet and will update sig in a bit!

    Well done everyone!!
