Don't some people freeze stuff in a pyrex bowl or similar and then once it's frozen transfer it to an ordinary plastic bag ?
    I do this sometimes.
But more recently been using the aforementioned method, as its easier for me when I am working.
    It works for me :o

Its great that so many of you are putting savings away for something specific, its good to have a goal in mind. The reason I asked the question was that when I gave up smoking I intended to put the money aside, but never got started and after a few weeks I didn’t really feel the benefit so I’m happy that so many of you are more sensible than me! :T

Belfastgirl – well done you on getting yourself out of a financial hiccup!

TheBees, I think you have it right, some savings for long term (mortgage) and some things to enjoy in the near future.

My money used to slip through my fingers frighteningly quickly but since I found OS, and since I’ve stopped shopping for amusement :D I’ve had all the bills money ready before they come in and also money for an unexpected bill – I’ve never been in that position in my life before and I’ve actually got less money to spend now than ever before. Its such a nice feeling :j

The way I freeze soup is to stand a plastic bag in a poly tub (usually the 3 for 99p from Morrisons), put soup in the bag,get creases out as [STRIKE]zippy bag snob[/STRIKE] nopot says :D seal bag and stand the tub in the freezer. When its frozen I take the bag from the tub and just stack the bags in the freezer – usually store all soup in a carrier or something to keep it together. Its less messy if you fold the top of the bag down (to the outside) for the top 2 or 3 inches before you fill ;)

edited to add the bit in red so it actually makes sense :D
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

  • I have a load of stuff frozen in bags and I'm having a devil of a time with them all slipping around when I open the freezer :) Next time I'm trying the bag in a box trick to try to make them all the same shape at least roughly.

BTW it seems a lot of us are having computer trouble, just thought I'd check if any of you others who are having bother are Virgin media? Our BB is up and down like....well fill in the blank yourself but you get the picture. Very annoying, thankfully I at least negotiated the price down or I'd be very cross.
  • we are doing well, we have had 6 no spend days! we have inventoried the freezer & are using up some of the goodies in there instead of buying more.

    from freezer
tonight we had a yummy home made chicken casserole (froze 2 portions last time we made it),
the boys had smart price cheese and tomato pizzas we got reduced to 17p with added cheese, & chips
we had bacon rolls for lunch
last night chicken curry (portions from extra made last time)

we have a giant ham, which we got free from a glitch at tesco at xmas (4 more in the freezer:T ), defrosting which will be roasted in honey and oj - should last for a few meals

  • managed another NSD yesterday
i got asked by the local papershop to cover a round as one of the usual kids was sick- worked on the theory it was £3 i wouldnt of had so it went straight in my £1 a day pot.:D .

i bung all my clods and coppers in a demi-john at the end of the week, that will be used for hliday spends in the arcades etc for the kids (and hopefully a few ice-creams as well)

ive started saving my plastic trays as well and freezing left over portions in those once they are frozen i can 'knock' them out into a plastic bag i just need to make sure i label them up;)

4 of mine NEED haircuts in the next week but im going to take the money out as extra and just note it as an 'extra expense' if i try squeezing it out of the grocery money ill just go way over for the month. I've booked 2 for thursday and2 for next monday a friend whos a hairdresser comes round and does them here its easier and cheaper

My total bounced up to £148.20 this morning as I had to raid the Grocery purse to buy DS a bus pass as I had no cash left in my other purse as DD at uni needed cash yesterday:eek:

Do us grown ups ever get money to spend on us:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

The bus pass is a good deal though as he buys a voucher for £6.50 at college which he can exchange on the bus for a £7.50 weekly pass which gives him unlimited journeys for the week.

Hope everyone is OK this morning and managing to keep warm - I am all for OS in my life but on days like these I am glad I have central heating:j

    Potatoes - 1.25kg
    Carrots(6) - 620g
    Onions (3) - 490g
    Jerusalem Artichokes - 560g
    Broccoli (2hds) - 500g
    Tomatoes (3) - 340g
    Curly Lettuce
    Savoy Cabbage - 520g
The above is the £7 basic box and then I add in the following as extras each week:
    Cucumber

    Bananas (7) - 1kg

So this was £10 and includes delivery.

Good assortment for us and includes the extra salad items I will need for packups.

I always need cucumber on hand as it is used in nearly every sandwich/wrap going that DS2 has, so it was just easier to order it each week as an eaxtra on top of the basic price.

Organic Box as per previous post £10

    Doorstep Milkman £4.26

This means I'm over with another grocery shop on Monday, thought I was probably being a little ambitious for the first time but hopefully it will all pan out over the year.

    Morning all

Need to add €11.43 to my total..for:-
    • 2kilo organic oranges-€2.49
    • 10 large organic eggs -€2.89
    • chicken livers €1.25 -thought id give them a try
    • a piece of beef €1.90 -don't have beef very often so fancied a change
    • 3 lots of broccoli @49c -€1.47
    • 8 cherry yoghurts €1.49
So im still under budget for this month :T

Its been so interesting to see what everyone is doing, or planning on doing with the money saved from the grocery challenge... its amazing to think just what we can do with the money we would have just eaten, or in a lot of cases -thrown away ....
I have always cooked from scratch... but now i sit and try and think " just what was i spending it all on?" ... we eat really well, healthily, and enjoy all our meals much more..it really is a shocker ...and to boot -im still losing weight and eating proper home cooked meals to do it :j heck i should have tried this years ago

Im allready pondering about March ....and have decided to set myself a bit more of a challenge :rotfl: I have a list of the freezer, cupboard contents and had sat and made menu plans -for 12 weeks and i still had loads left  .. and it is nearly all stuff i have got from this months budget, and nearly all meat etc lots of whoopsed organic corn fed chickens, turkey steaks and the like-plus loads of HM sausages :T ..well im going to have a look today and workout a meal plan just for March..want to try some new recipes ;) .. and then when i have seen just what i have got..im hoping to set a budget of €50 for the month :rotfl: ..I think it should be "do-able" but will pop back n let you know when i have worked it out... as it would mainly be fruit n veg i needed.. then i can bank the rest of the "housekeeping" :j never thought i could get so excitable about NOT spending:rotfl:

right folks im off to make a start.. keep up the good work everyone..nearly a new month :D
