Hi nopot2pin, this may sound like a stupid question but... How do you store the soup to freeze it? do you use special bags or do you use plastic containers with lids please? and do you freeze individual portions or do you guesstimate portion quantities?

  • In answer to Rosieben's query about what we're all saving for, we're aiming for double glazing. We have 13 windows and have so far managed to do 2 of them and paid cash. We found a wonderfull joiner who gave us a fantastic price all broken down so we could put in one or two as we had the money, overall his price was cheaper than any of the big guys. The only problem with the way we're doing it is the prices may rise slightly as we save, but we'll still save a fortune on not being in debt for them.
We also built our own version of built in wardrobes several years ago and have just had the most georgous full height doors made for the huge area, they cost £440 and we paid for them cash.
Several years ago we were on the brink of being declared bankrupt because of various awfull things that happened to us, thankfully we turned a corner. Now we just aim for that never to happen again. We have halved our mortgage, cleared our overdraft, cleared our ccards and have a wee bit put by for emergencys. Maybe if I knew about this site all those years ago we would have reached this point sooner, but it's good to still feel normal when I look at this site and see other frugal minded people!
    Are you all asleep now?!!!!

    Thanks :D:D

Sometimes I use plastic containers if I only have one or two portions.
I normally use the zippy bags. I get these from Costco. They are expensive initially, as you have to buy 4 boxes at a time. But I find these to be the best.
I have a soup mug that I use as a portion size.. this holds about 3 of my ladels. I used to use the ladel, but that was waaaay to much faffing.

When I zip the bag up.. I fold it back on itself, so the empty part of the bag has the soup part of the bag on top of it, to keep the air out, and the zip is flat againt the worktop... Easy peesy Lemon squeeezy:D

When freezing lie the bag flat, with as little creases in the bag as you can. It makes it easier to get out of the bag.

Thanks for sharing that with us MFFM. Congratulations on your turnaround and I wish you every success for your future. I'd fight tooth and nail to avoid getting into debt now, as it just makes for a miserable existance. Being frugal and avoiding the debt trap, on the otherhand, adds up to a very satisfying lifestyle (IMO), especially when you can see the fruits of your own labours. Well done :T :T :T

    Thanks again.

I'm sure you're not being a snobby bag-i mean bag snob!!! :rotfl::rotfl:it would be cr*p if the bags leaked all over the freezer wouldn't it, and just think of the extra work it would make. I shall look for the ziploc bags!!!

  • Well I've spent £299.54 so I officially have 46p to do me until the end of the month......!

i've got most of the stuff in for the week but I do need to buy a chicken and some mince as we've visitors for the weekend. Also, OH will not live on veggie food every day of the week. It was an achievement to get him cut down to just 3 or 4 meat-eating days a week!
We'll just have to stretch out the store cupboards as much as possible. But I've even run out of flour now for bread - maybe I'll visit Lidl to see if they've still got that offer on.
Still, at least it won't reach the horrendous total we had last month (well over £600...)

Someone else may have a better suggestion, that is easier to obtain.
Might even give them a try if they do ;):p

Don't some people freeze stuff in a pyrex bowl or similar and then once it's frozen transfer it to an ordinary plastic bag ?
