    Afternoon all :D

    Hi there -shelovestobuy,

Would hubby be happy with HM tortillas?

I have started making my own tortillas -and they are far nicer than the ready made ones..and cost pennies to make (and they freeze well too), you can fill them with allsorts, and your hubby could put them on the Geroge forman to make a lovely tasty hot meal...he could take his fillings in a tub and put them together at work
we are having them tonight with leftover chicken, and caramalised onions n peppers ooh and a smear of sour cream and we will have them with salad..

I have done them with HM meatballs, ham, ...but they are great for making a meal out of the odds n sods in the fridge
Also if you have any left, they are nice cut into triangles and baked in the oven to have with dips-and you could try all sorts of seasonings on them

Just in case you want to give them a try, the recipe is:
    1. 2 cups plain flour
    2. 1.5tsp baking powder
    3. 1tsp salt
    4. 2tsp veg oil
    5. 3/4 cup warm milk
simply mix it all together and knead for a couple of mins, leave to rest (covered) for about 30 mins...break into 8 and roll into balls, cover and leave 10 mins, then roll out to about 8" round..although mind aren't exactly round :rotfl: -but they taste wonderful;)

Heat a heavy based frtying pan. drop one in and turn over when bubbles appear..about 2 mins on each side-then place in a teatowel to keep warm whilst you make the rest..

Im lucky, i have a hubby who doesn't care what i buy as he knows whatever i turn it into - he will love it :T and he takes flasks of HM soup and HM bread to work every day.
We were only talking the other day about how much i have cut off of the food budget..and hubby reckons he hadn't noticed although he now enjoys his meals even more than before..think its because i have had to become more creative :rotfl: ..still i am stashing all the spare cash - so we are both feeling the benefits..and especially on our waist lines :p

Thanks,I'll try that!!!Hubby certainly loves his meat so I can see him loving the chicken tortillas.I am going to have a go at a quiche first of all and see how that goes down.
I am confident that the general family menu planning I do now is working but I definately need to tackle the work lunches and get the spending down on those.Hubby does already enjoy taking the odd meal in from home when there are tasty leftovers,he has taken a curry or a flask of soup in the past but its not a regular thing.I am going to do up a seperate daily work lunch menu and batch cook and freeze some dishes that hubby likes as well as having a go at some new things.I do need a bigger freezer, must have another look on freecycle for one.

Its me again, looking for some advice.

I made spicy chicken casserolle for dinner today, and theirs loads of sauce left. Im afraid it was a Colemans packet. Do you think it would be okay to blitz the sauce with the blender, and then freeze it!

If not, is there anything else I could do with it?

    Jackie

I am sure you can freeze it once cooked. I made chicken marengo today in my slow cooker and there was a lot of sauce left - basically just tomato puree and hm chicken stock. I added some leftover cream and a bit of milk and hey presto OH and I both have a bowl of soup for lunch tomorrow! I am making a loaf overnight in my BM (using the cheap overnight electricity) so we will have the crusty top of the loaf to eat with the soup. My OH loves this especially as the bread will be filling the house with a wonderful smell around breakfast time. Blimey, it's making me hungry already!

Managed a NSD today but will have to buy at least one banana tomorrow as I only have one left. I swim after work on a Wednesday so I don't get home until after 7 and I will not survive unless I have my daily banana! Main shop will be on Thursday morning before i start my late shift. This coming week will be a higher than usual spend because of having visitors at the weekend. But I am not too worried. Off to bed now as I am shattered! Night night everyone.
  • Went to Morrisons today and spent just under £40. It was more than I hoped I would spend. I usually go shopping on Fridays but won't be this week so I bought a little extra to get us over the weekend. I thought it best rather than "just nipping out" for a pint of milk and get don't know what else with it  .

I didn't have to buy nappies as DD has taken to potty training quite well over the weekend :D. Just had to buy extra loo roll for the little accidents, I have started to use Morrisons value at 89p for 8 rolls and the difference between the own brand isn't that different.

Bought a couple of offers that I didn't really need but will come in useful later. Branston Baked Beans 4 for a £1 and Schwepps Lemonade was on BOGOF.

Hopefully I can pull back a bit and try to stay within budget but me thinks I'll go over by £20 ish :(.

Thanks everyone who has replied with Weight Watchers advice. I was horrified to find how many points were in my home made fairy cakes - I normally put a bit of icing on the top which would push them up even higher! I guess I'll just have to not eat them! I bought some soreen malt loaves on BOGOF in Co-op today which work out at 1.5 points per slice so if I fancy something sweet I'll have that. I don't actually crave sweet things. My downfall is savoury snacks like crisps, crackers, cheese etc. Also, working in a pre-school I have regular morning and afternoon snack times and also sit and eat with the children at lunch time so food is all around me! I'm allowing myself a rich tea biscuit at snack times and this evening I'm just about to tuck into a delicious pack of twiglets:rotfl: .

I will definitely take a look at the weight loss thread. Thanks again. Michelle

  • I've just updated my sig as I spent £28.52 today:eek: . I went out of my way to go to the co-op as they had bagels which DS loves on bogof,I had to fill the new freezer didn't I ! Oh and yet more ready brek  I wish I could find a cheap alternative, at least it's on offer at the mo. I also went to a Lidl as we needed fruit and veg, it was way cheaper even takeing into account the petrol.
Doing the GC has made me realise I shop far too often for wee amounts, it's a lot of time wasted. I must try to get more organised next month, the trouble is as we stay so far from shops I like to go in for the offers when we pass one:naughty: .

My money saving month is not going well. There was the £400 of dental work I needed, we need to pay for a two-day trip to Whitby for a wedding (I budgetted for this, but that was before the dentist), and I have also put down £250 as a deposit on a holiday. Really it's only the dentist that wasn't in the original budget (as the savings goals include a set amount for holidays) but it is a bit depressing that the total in the current account is less than I expected.

On the food front, it's not been wonderful either. I do the cooking round here (DH used to, but he seems to have lost the knack) and I've been absolutely snowed under and stressed out at work. In the last month I have marked 200 essays on top of my normal work and I still have 50 to go. The total number of words in the essays was 350,000!!!! Many of them mis-spelt, in the wrong order and completely irrelevant. So I have had to resort to faster food. It's not been a complete disaster - we had things like fish fingers and chips and hm curry in the freezer, but we've ended up buying a few extras like chapattis. And with the school holiday, we've had to pack lunches for the children - they are at holiday club. Then there's valentines day ... though I have a big piece of fillet steak in the freezer, and a whole duck, plus some good prawns, so it is possible to put most of a special meal together without shopping.

But roll on March. I'll still be working weekends and some evenings on my 'second' job writing manuals for legal exec students, but the money is good and we get two weeks off teaching over easter, yay (and the children are booked in to holiday club ...).

Morning Gang....sort of keeping an eye on the spends:o

<<<As you can see from here, we are in West Sussex, where the rest of the world think stockbrokers commute from each day with the relating wage packet to boot....IF ONLY!!!!
We have a Summafled in a little parade of shops within walking distance, but it's prices reflect the 'convenience' side of it's location; an out-of-town-ish MrT that is looking to expand a-gain; a sort of Sainsbug central in our closest town & a little bit bigger SF that gives you a headache cuz it's such an oppressive building somehow. Lidl's & Morrismen are 10miles either direction, while Avthey & Owdi are about 50min drive. Proper good value farm shops are evcen more rare than the hen's teeth they proport to sell:D

Moniker--recipe for the morengo please; never heard of it before, but sounds yum.
JayneC--congrats on the new arrival; no offence, but it's not a title I'm in any hurry to acquire meself:D
Sassamac & JayJay--I use cheapie masking tape to label stuff for the freezer, & use a thicker felt tip to write on it; plus I've found a little card index box & I'm using postcards to make my own recipe box by picking the brains of all yooze clever stix:D I thought about a book, or series of notebooks, to keep the recipes in some sort of logical order, before finally deciding on the method I've got now. Then as new recipes come up, I can add them into the relevent bit without having to cross other stuff out....IYSWIM:p
    MHE --belated b'day wishes.....sorry I can't help with hangover cures cuz I've never had one:cool: ...seriously...I've never had a hangover...why don't you believe me:confused:
MrsM--this had me :rotfl: ...got visions of a squaddie sitting on his tin hat in the middle of an airfield "no running water, no toilet -they have to use another sections  ... so he sits there with his flask" & his legs X till he gets home!!!

Ok...so I've caught up I think....& my spends up to Mon evening are £53:73, that includes a chunk spent in Wilkos for bits towards hampers for Easter, & a b'day prezzie for a nephew next week. Not too bad I hope.

    Happy Savings folks.

Right.. halfway through my month (28th jan-29th feb)

AND of my £600 budget have spent under half.. so I am on target which has been RELLY hard to achieve as the children are off shcool this week and eating me out of house and home as usual!!

I swear it is cheaper to have them at school and pay dinner money and bus fares!!!!!!!!!

They are eating about £6 of a fruit a DAY between them.. I'm not complaining.. I am just amazed they can get off the loo!!!!!!! lol At least it isn't crisps and sweets :D. I can't understand how some people claim their children won't eat fruit and veg.. mine can't get enough of it... it is just there and they hekp themselves whenthey wish.. apart from the little 3 who can't reach the bowl!

I'll need a new sack of spuds at the weekend too.. I have enough for 2 meals left in my hopper.. £6 for a huge sack isn't bad though.
