Thanks for the info - our fault for not checking the validity but I understand most countries (if not all) require at least 6 months left on your passport at time of exit of that country now.

Not sure that's true, but a lot of TAs say that just to cover themselves...the US doesn't require 6 months, but a lot of TAs tell people it does.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I'll ring first thing on Wednesday & if necessary DH will have to drive to Durham!! A fast track will cost an extra £52.00 but its worth it not to have my stomach churning :o

No, they don't. There are very very few countries in the world that require this. Not even USA does and NO countries within EU does, your passport is valid for travel until the day it expires.

It's a falacy banded about by lazy travel agents who tell everyone the same just to cover their own back.

Hi all - thanks for your responses - all very helpful. However I know from experience (and the Consulate) that Israel need at least 6 months validity as I travel there reasonably often. Turkey also require 6 months (which is where I'm going) & I've not been advised by the TA - far from it! I dont know about other countries but as the PO will issue a passport up to 9 months in advance of expiry it would be safe to assume this is not uncommon.
I'm going to phone in the morning & see exactly what position we are in & keep my fingers crossed. :)

Well I phoned the passport office yesterday - couldn't get through to anyone and no joy on their ringback option, so I emailed again through the website. Got a response early this morning to say passport had been printed but allow 4/5 days for delivery. Persisting down here so we stayed in anyway & courier delivered this afternoon. Phew! DH could have caught a later flight but we're only going for a week so would have spoilt the trip somewhat. Needless to say I will certainly be allowing PLENTY of time for the renewal of my passport.
Thanks to you all for your really helpful suggestions

To guarantee your passport in time for your holiday you, you should use the 1 week fast-track service. You will need child's Full Birth certificate as well as mother's Birth certificate and proof of any change of name (eg marriage cert) if its different from mother's birth name

Hey everyone I am after some advice.

I go away in 2 weeks and and sent away for my passport 2 weeks ago. I have tracked it and it's at te Durham office "going through the examination process" Does anyone know what this actually means? Does it mean it's been looked at now or it's in a pile awaiting to be looked at?

Also, I phoned to try and upgrade but the guy on the phone said you are not allowed to upgrade to a weeks/one day service. My passport is only a renewal so I thought I would be able to upgrade? Can someone tell me if I can or not? Because I've heard of others being able to upgrade. The guy told me to phone back a week before I leave and then they'll see what they can do. I'm not sure if I wait until a week before travel to contact them again that I'll definitely be helped.

    Any advice would be great!

    Thank-you for reading.

They are so busy that you will only be able to upgrade if your date of travel is within a week, once your ppt application is being dealt with it will take 2 days to print & 2 days to deliver - so plenty of time at the moment
    Titch :)

Hi, thanks for your reply! Do you think it's safe to leave it until a week before I leave? Or should I try and do it a bit earlier to make sure I definitely get my passport?

Also my passport is in Durham but my closest passport office is Glasgow, if I upgrade does this mean I have to go to Durham for an appointment?

    Thanks again for reading.
