We used 5 units yesetrday current average over the last 16 days is just under 8 units per day. am aiming to get this down to 7/6 units per day, especially over the summer when we don't use as much lighting and are outside most of the time.

My Husband has been reading his PC Mag and it says something about some software you can install on your PC. That helps even out the power usage. Has anyone heard of this? Is it any good? Does it actually lower the power usage of the PC?

In XP if you got to "Control panel" and then select "power options" you can change some of the settings to reduce the power usage but I've no idea how effective they are.

I did find some free software that does what you want but it basically put a nice front end on the standard Windows "power options"

Thanks to this thread we've got our electric down to 4-5 units per day (with the occassional higher usage of no more than 9 units) and the average daily electric usage for last month is lower than any quarter last year, so a massive improvement. Plus our Gas usage is now doen to 3 units per week, approx 97KWH, but I think I can reduce this further by sorting out the timer for the HW. In one month we've paid off (well except for £7) our massive over spend in March and it looks like we'll be back in credit at the end of May. Thank you everyone.

I thought of this, after watching the Panorama programme last week.

This morning at 8.30am I had a brainstorm and checked my electricity meter and wrote down the reading. The i whizzed round the house and turned everything off by the plug.

I am going to record the meter reading tomorrrow morning at 8.30 am to see how much electricity I used and to see if I can reduce it day by day or week by week.

I need to buy more electricity saving light bulbs as only have three in the house at the moment.

My reading I took today at 8.30am was 67076

    Anyone want to join me?

Oh I've been doing this for a few months now. What I do is I take the reading weekly and then set up a spread sheet and divide the number by 7 to get the daily useage. Then I average it over the month. My average useage is around 9-12 units per day. My Electric DD was around £80 per month ! By doing what I've done, I've been able to show the electric company that I am reducing my usage, hence my DD Is now £50 per month!!

I use almost 80 units weekly, I used to use 104 units on average in the week. My 80 units a day would be about 11 - 11.5 units daily, must make time to read this thread to see how I can use less as my monthly DD for my electric is £43.

Just to add to what others have said, be wary of old appliances

We had an old fridge in the garage, got it from granny :)

Then I got one of the plug in meters from maplins, shortly afterwards I aquired an fridge/freezer sized fridge (big one ;) ) and plugged it into the meter.

The old little fridge was drawing 10 times the power of the newer even though it was half the size !!!

Good thread this one, I think the electricity police are going to arrive at my house now .... they can sit beside the phone police, and the internet police, and the shower police etc etc LoL

    good luck folks,

I have 4 of those plug in meters and I have all of them plugged in. Problem is I never remember to check how much electric they have used, or how much what they are plugged in to has cost me. :o  I must reset them and then check them once a week at the same time and day.

We are averaging 9 units elec per day. I dont know how to get it any lower. I cant work out how some families are only using 5-6 units.
For the last few days we have been away.
I left on the fridge freezer and one light (energy bulb). That was all that was on.
In three days we used 9 units of electricty, could someone tell me if this is good or if my fridge freezer is using too much electricity.
