How much electricity do you use in a day?

Every shower I've used has drawn a full 8.5/9.5kw for the full duration.
With that much water gushing through a 3kw shower would be freeeeeezing!
I do like a very hot and fast/powerful shower though.. =]ॐ Signature Removed by Someones Mum. ॐ0 -

I think you misread the the posts.
The OP has an 8.5kW shower(not 3 kW) and Kittiwoz was giving an estimate for 35 minutes showering. Even if the heater was drawing the full 8.5kW it would use under 5kWh in that time.0 -
I wasn't out to impress anyone. I was just trying to work it out.
I don't really get how that works though because if a shower uses 9 litres per minute then that is 315l in 35 mins. Even if the shower used a full 4kWh in that time it is only enough to raise the temperature of 315l of water by just under 11 degrees. I'm sure you're correct in what you are saying because you normally do know what you're talking about but thermodynamically it doesn't seem to make sense.
Kittiwoz,
Nothing wrong with your thermodynamic calculations. It is your assumption that a shower will produce a flow of 9 litres a Min at typical showering temperatures that is the problem
If you go to this link you will see a graph on page 8 that shows the flow rates for an 8.5kW shower.
http://www.mirashowers.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/1057732_w2_a.pdf
It gives an example:
For the Mira Zest 8.5 kW on full power setting with an incoming water
supply at 10°C and a showering temperature at 42°C, the temperature rise is 32°C.
The flow rate is therefore, 4 l/min.
Reading from the graph the 8.5kW shower will raise the water by approx 15C at a flow rate of 9L/min0 -
That makes sense then. I did find a couple of different websites that said a typical shower uses 9 litres per min so I didn't just guess but none of them were manufacturers. One was the bathroom association which is British, one was a US company and the other one was Northumbrian water.
That'll teach me just to google keyword instead of trying to figure out who would give me the information I'm looking for and googling them. I'm normally more savvy than that.0 -
I've used 10 units on standard energy and 24 on heating control energy.
My fridge freezer has been hooked up a energy monitor since 10.15pm last night and it has currently used 0.83 kwh of energy. It's an A rated Bosch.“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0 -
Read meter again this morning only 5 units yesterday very happy about that but still looking for cause of my high monthly reading.0

Ah, so I did.
35mins showering is a very low number I'd imagine though.
Alikay said that there are 5 people who shower twice a day - thats going to be 5-10mins each shower for most people. Thats 50-100mins, added to that s/he said that the teens take long showers and you are looking at over 2 hours of showers a day. 10kwh would be feasible in that time.ॐ Signature Removed by Someones Mum. ॐ0 -

The best thing to advise Alikay is that her shower will use a maximum of 1kWh for every 7 minutes showering - a little over 1 pence a minute!
So she can get the stopwatch out.0 -
read this thread yesterday and got me thinking, i pay £30 a month DD all year round, but im sure i can get this down. After reading the thread i took a meter reading. Im going to read it same time next week to get an average daily reading and then work on cutting back.
I then open my emails today and receive one from the electricity company with my annual report........it says that I have used 003546kwh for the last year! now i have just read the thread again and correct me if im wrong but 1kwh is the same as 1 unit?.....so I have divided 3546 by 365 to get my average daily use and its 9.71units.......so will carry on as normal and take next weeks reading then I will try hard to cut back. If ive got all this wrong then please correct me.
So I need to find out what items use up the most electricity?? I have an immersion heater so im guessing that will be use the most?? but we try not to put it on that often, next im guessing is the washing machine, this is used a lot but will monitor........any help and suggestions will be appreciated, i want to get my monthly payment down to £20 I think this is a realistic goal
many thanks0 -

Firstly a unit is a kWh.
The average usage in UK is 3,300kWh pa so you are about average.
If you 'only' use 3546kWh you presumably have another for of heating? Gas? Oil?
If so why do you use an Immersion heater? It will always be cheaper to use gas/oil to heat water than Electricity(unless you have Economy 7)
Washing machines on 30/40C setting do not use a lot - typically 0.6 to 0.9kWh. The biggest culprits are tumble dryers, Dishwashers, Electric showers and electric cookers.0
