When we bought our first flat the sellers (jewish) told us they had thought we were the only people who looked at it that weren't jewish. A plus in their eyes because they could then take their mezuzahs ( little prayer boxes on door posts, google for more info) with them, then they met our parents (who insisted on looking round before exchange) and it dawned on them they had made a mistake.
Btw, I did not put a frowns face that your husband looks young, it just appeared.
Dh's mother had pathological fear that peole would find out she was Jewish, (inherited from her parents who had logical reason to fear it) and sadly passed on to her children, especially her daughter. When she got engaged recently sil was terrified that some document would show she was somehow Jewish (it seems weird to me, her dad is well known as a Jew) and after some considerable pushing from dh she 'broke' it to her fianc! (who has known her for ten years). My guess is he knew (he knows her dad and studies same subject area and probably read his wiki entry etc..... But he acted as if he didn't and she was amazed he did not mind. He did suggest they told his parents, who have been giving her cooked breakfasts for many years, and they asked if they should refrain from giving her bacon. I think that's very sweet of them really. The thing is, that to her it was a huge and important deal, to the people around her she is just her, like dh is dh to me.
Though on paper dh was not my type at all, it's nothing to do with the fact he is of Jewish decent. And off paper and in reality he is perfect.0 -
Oh, and I remember great discussion in inlaw family about Christopher hitchens 'coming out' as Jewish (he was an estranged friend of fil but dh and bil were still in touch with him). Fil seemed convinced this reflected on his brother, who is an active Anglican. Fil was furious when I pointed out a lot of original Christians were Jewish, and that it was not a faith known for being backward in conversions through out its history and I didn't think it reflected 'poorly' on anyone.
I may be naive in this, but while I know bad racism exists I think in many circles one can move without it touching one.
E.g. Middymum had mentioned she was black, I never thought of it again, I occasionally mention to michaels a product he might want to try on the kids' hair.
Prejudice does happen 'positively'. I had always assumed if I married and had children it would be a black man and mixed race children...obviously my ideal of male beauty was 'tuned' where most young men were black...but ultimately I fell in love with a person, not a 'type'0 -
DS2 bought "Hitch 22" ( CH's biography) and I did think it hypocritical that such a zealous athiest would have 2 religious weddings.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I am not concerned if people are white/black, Jewish/Muslim, gay/straight .... no coming out needed with me. I take people at face value, based on how they treat me.
Maybe it's the groups themselves that are too hung up on coming out ... when mostly nobody really cares what they are, so long as they're good people.0 -

I think the history behind their reluctance is the complication on, fear of non acceptance can be very powerful, fear of persecution too. But yes, I agree with you in most moderate places.
There are somethings I would find hard to accept.0 -

Been to DS's parents' evening today. Not a full one with all the teachers, but a mini one with just the form tutors and one or two others - I saw his form tutor and the senco. All agree he is settling in much better than anyone expected, given his isolation etc and unwillingness to join in at primary school. Also, his subject teachers aren't expressing any concerns about him academically, which is teacher-speak for "it's all going OK so far but we've only known him a few weeks so we can't be very specific yet".
I got the results of his reading age and spelling age, too. When I came home and told him, he guessed 5 for both, and was amazed when I told him his reading age is actually 11 and spelling age 9 - not bad for a dyslexic. They told me a bit about their literacy strategy, too, which will be starting in a week or two and often sees kids move forward 2 or 3 years in reading/spelling age over the first year of secondary school.
I am feeling happy that paying the extra to buy in this catchment was the right decision for him.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
