Tis true, alas. As we discussed some months ago, it may take many attempts to give up but it's vital to keep trying. Took me 30 attempts.
Lydia, we're all coming down with colds as DS has gone back to school and DD has started at uni.
I gave up smoking successfully while I had a cold. It made smoking horrible and I thought I might as well get this cold to do me some good for a change, and it helped immensely through the first weeks making them much less difficult.
Seize the moment, say I!
Well, zag, if I were a smoker I would take your advice and try to give up during this cold. Since I'm not, it still doesn't seem very useful.
Edit: It's the cold that doesn't seem useful, not your advice, zag!Hope you get well soon.
Thanks misskNot much to report here as it was a quiet end to the week, mainly because youngest got that horrible cold that others have reported on here and was off school!
I hope he gets better soon. He has all my sympathy.
Any news on job applications from Sue or PN or Nikkster or anybody else?Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
Fixed the heating - found that some builder/pliumber had at some point added a screwdriver valve to the central heating circuit (against regs) and that the current builders had for some reason closed said valve whilst moving a rad and some pipes and then staff had changed in the 2 months it took them to reconnect everything and thus no one knew this valve (under the floor under a basin pedestal) and so no circulation to the upstairs radiator.
Now it is much too hotI think....0 -

Aside from being offered the job of mucosal membrane care...
I have signed a contract :j... but the accompanying letter said offer was subject to references. I know that at least one of my referees had not sent off the reference as of last week - 'always lets people see them before they are sent' and couldn't get hold of me (which is a shame as they way things were planned my handover to the new staff was non-existent depsite me giving 3 months notice of leaving and staying on for an extra 6 weeks so I'm sure it would have been 'useful' if I could have gone back for a couple of weeks [/sarcasm]). Good job I don't think that this is a bit of a power trip to make sure they have my contact details.
So I am hoping that I have a job that starts at the end of next month, but it might all fall apart at the last minute (I have a feeling it will, was a bit too good to be true to be offered the job). But I am trying to ignore my fears and organise some accomodation and I think I have a car lined up (my first ever!).
I don't really like big upheavals, and this is a very drawn out one (applied for job in Feb) where I am not sure of the outcome (ie if I will actually be starting a new job). But hopefully it will all work out well0 -
Strange things are afoot in Aus this long weekend.
The Sydney Swans won the AFL final and Melbourne Storm are winning the Rugby League final. It's rather like a Brazillian side winning the World Series baseball and then the USA men's side winning the World Cup.0 -

Does not compute. Does not compute.
When I was in Australia and chatting to my cousin about my old fave aussie rules team he said something along the lines of "well aussie rules isn't as Vic based as it used to be, but the out of state teams aren't as good". Oh how things have changed in a very short space of time. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

The AFL final was pretty close in fairness but Storm have trashed the Doggies today. Too many sloppy knock-ons and missed tackles.
The best thing was I went to my local RSL to watch the first half and they had a special offer on: $3 schooners. As the till hadn't registered the price cut they were giving them away for nothing!0 -
I'm sure there is an economics dissertation out there on how the relative success of domestic sports teams reflects relative economic performance as industries wax and wane....plus the growing impact of internationalisation as evidenced by the Chelski's of this world.
Presumably Gen would put yesterday's result at Old Trafford in to the unlikely sporting results categoryI think....0 -

Yay! Enjoy the first car. I'm about to graduate to my second, less ridiculous one.
Am sure the upheaval for job will settle you down. Most people miss having a routine of school or job. Humans aren't really made for wandering around aimlessly.
Got a nightmare journey into London today. Must go and meet up with some friends, but no trains until Gatwick. Driving vs bus on a Sunday is the same so I've got a bus journey, train journey and half the tubes in London not working
Will be fun when I get there, it's the getting there bit!0 -

Yesterday was mean reversion. I even stayed up to watch it despite kick-off not being until 2.30am! Bloody great it was.
I confess to having a teeny snooze from a little after half time until 9am.
Sport and economy is an interesting one. There's the obvious stuff of sports teams as businesses and sports stars as self-employed businessmen, in individual sports especially. Just look at the fuss Murray made when he couldn't find his watch when he won the US Open. Then there's the economic impact of sport: the shops were deserted here during both finals as they are in the UK when the Grand National is on. It's a huge area. I might even feel a Masters coming on (only joking Mrs Generali).0
