My uncle was a fireman. When he was alive he made us all have plans as to how to get out of the house in a fire - in line with Lydia's earlier post - so that's very much the type of family I come from.

Recently I had to do one of those online training courses at work regarding fire safety. It's a half an hour tick the box thing. Half an hour of knowing what fire extinguisher to use where. Nowhere in the quiz did they tell you to point at the base of the fire:eek:.

Fwiw my fireman uncle also thought the most important thing that most houses don't have is a fire blanket for the kitchen. They are so cheap too.

I've just done the same tick box course! I know what the fire extinguishers do, but not how to use them, because that's someone elses job!

In event of fire I'd just leave and stand outside panicking.

    That's my genius master plan.

    Panic, sob and whimper.

I hve actually cause a couple of small kitchen fires.

Calm head, swift action and wet towel solved both as they were both very small and no damage to anything else...cooker, furniture cabinetry etc.

Cannot really on calm head or swift action or knowing what the right 'home' cure is anymore because my head is becoming unreliable again (forgot my mobile number this morning' had that mobile all my adult life) so a dire blanket and a couple of extonguishers, bearing in mind we have real fireplaces in the house, seems pretty sensible now.

    1) my boiler has blown up again for the third year running, but at least this time it hasn't done it in the middle of winter when we need the heating on. i turned it off and on again, but no joy. the pump unit appears to be leaking, i expect that can't really be cured through the on/off trick...

    2) i have been told i can't start my new job until 1 november as they can't get anyone in to replace me until then, which is annoying, as i have had enough of this now and am ready to move on. on the plus side they did let me book the 1st week in october off work, no idea what i will do with that time. languish in bed, eat sandwiches, watch tv i hope.

Can your gf get time off then too chewy? You could stay in bed together. :)

Other reasons I hate wall cabinets:
1] Where wall cabinets are either side of the stove/hob, I am scared the heat will set them alight
2] Where a toaster is used under/near a wall cabinet I am scared the heat will set them alight.

But then I'm also scared that the heat of a hob would set alight any worktop if the hob were fitted to the worktop .... and that the heat from an oven might set fire to a base unit adjacent.

Welcome to my Full O' Fear life :)
