Nice people thread part 6 - thrice by twice as nice :)

I was determined to fit low energy LED lighting throughout the downstairs of the house when we renovated.
This explains why we can be seen moving cautiously in an evening, bumping into bits of furniture, whilst pretending it's just "a different sort of brightness".
LIR, tread carefully, and try a mock up first
Thanks. Building control require 75 % of our work is low energy. This is over a seating area in a room where there will be three work surface lights for pooled light and three lengths of led concealed for more uplighting. I reckon three normal lights puddling is ok for surface, then i will have one light over cooker when we can afford a cooker hood. Obviously light like cottonseeds is more important than light to actually do anything by. I also hope to start collecting candle sconces. Someone is bound to think thats a joke. Originally of course, i did say i wanted all the ceiling lights to be candles, so i am being dragged into greater practicality.0 -
In an attempt to get to know you all (and since this thread is in the house prices section) has everyone here now bought their house, or are you all still looking to buy? I wont be buying for a few years yet, but I am interested to know what part of the country people are buying in, as there seem to be a lot of londoners on this forum.
We bought twenty six months ago. Dh also lodges or rents in london atm, but we have also done this between other countries. Before that I lived in my parents' house, with dh at weekends. Before that we lived in italy together, and before that in london together.
How well do you want to know us? Is that enough?:D0 -
We spent £300 on a ceiling light recently and I thought it was a lot of money. :rotfl:
Bought in 2009, Surrey/Middx borders, 2 bed end of terrace. I had a flat in Belgium, but with prices here the way they are, the sale of that was just a top-up for the deposit.
Mrs. Wheezy thinks it's our 'forever house', but I'd like a bit more garden/land.
It is a lot of money. Its mot to be thrown away. I would not spend 300 quid on something i didn't like, but by same token, if i like something a lot its worth alot to me. Imo, no light fitting on earth is 'worth' a couple of dozen thousands, if one i like as much is possible for a fraction iyswim.
Its like art, innit.0 -

I read that initially as "we bought twenty a period of 6 months ago".
My reaction was a serious gulp; it's a brave person who admits to buying that number of houses in here0 -

Almost as brave as posting a twentyfourthousand pound light

Heeheehee. I thought you were taking it calmly,
Lydia is right, i have no idea where to start a search, but i am. I have made a list of glass makers within reach. Now the bronze person remains a challenge. And someone to put the whole shebang together.0 -
PN, I suspect most of the NP feel about your recommendation to "g to your local silversmith" in much the same way you used to feel when you were living in Cornwall and people suggested you go to your local Waitrose or similar. I realise it's not quite the same: I suppose there must be people doing jewellery repair in my county, but I haven't the faintest idea how one would go about finding them.OK ... google locally for people that run silversmithing courses, see if any local colleges do .... and give them a bell. Say "Ello .... I wonder if you can 'elp me my old china. I've got a few bits and bobs I want to be cast... probably in bronze. Nothing special, not big .... is there somebody you can recommend that could make me a cast and get a 100 of so of these small items cast for me? It's just something for my house and not hard"
If you've got something they can simply copy .... then that's the hard bit. Otherwise you'd need to find some little man that fiddles with this stuff and get him to make you one up. Next step is the wax casting - google for anybody running a wax casting course and contact them and ask if they'd do it ..... and they'd probably know who to send it to..... so get the name off them, or ask them to get you a quote and do the sending.0 -

I should add that I opted for cooler lighting colour temperature. To some manufacturers like Halers, this means a reasonable 4000K. To other brands it can mean 6000+ kelvin.
I'm not saying it's anaemic, but in places it feels like I'm on set in the next Twilight movie0 -
