I'm on 'proper internet' now
No more dodgy/dropping signal - which is a real issue in this town.0 -
My mum had that rule too. I probably will in years to come too. Then they can learn to be responsible about budgeting for everything else, without having financial considerations push them towards deciding to cut down on coming to see me.
I like this one. Its sort of weird i like this one and not the other financial 'generosity' so much for people. Weird person i am.
I think the difference might be something like this being a warm and motherly act, a parachute even at times, whereas with young people fleeing the nest, the idea is not to give them a parachute to land softly unless they really need it ( where only the hardest person would stand back and watch someone struggle and fail or make poor choices) but rather to encourage them to fly and not need that parachute.
Dunno.
I have two parachutes on monday, one parent house sitting, the other driving me to hospital as dh cannot get the day off very easily and not allowed to drive myself.0 -
My car does about 3500 a year.
I moved my neighbour's car earlier (she's broken her leg)
'P' reg Honda Civic, owned by her from new, with 46,000 miles on it
Jumped in, started, chucked in 1st, alarm went off, shot forward nearly stalling, then red lined in 1st and 2nd to get onto her drive.......
She didn't think it had that much go in it, and tbh, neither did I

Students - how much is reasonable as a monthly allowance? DS is staying in halls but catering for himself. We'll pay his rent, but I'm not sure how much he needs for food, clothing, etc?
Also, he's going to Edinburgh, from London, and I don't fancy driving him there. (I'm a wuss when it comes to driving.) He wants to take loads of stuff with him, but this isn't very practical by train. Do any NP have a brilliant solution for getting him and his stuff there, not necessarily at the same time?
Edit: And we need insurance cover for his stuff + laptop.
Student insurance is mostly endsleigh (if he's in halls they are cheapest) but shop around when he moves into a private let.
There are some websites for lift sharing, can't think of any good ones but you'll find plenty of information on the student board0 -
This is what I meant when I said it would vary from person to person... and also why I said what I would "probably" do, meaning it's what I would like to be able to do if mine end up mature enough for that strategy at that age.
In any case, where I went, the first year had important exams at the end of it, and the 2nd year was the doss year.
My kids are some way off uni yet. DS will be 12 in October and DD will be 9 tomorrow.
Happy birthday to DD, I do hope she's being spoilt!0 -

1. We understtod the actual monetary value of what we received
2. We developed better time management skills ( imo a full time course is not fulltime, not in the way a full time job and being a parent or having a setious hobby is.
3. We had regular reminders of why we were studying from mixing with our work colleagues ( depending on job)
4. Vitally we left with less debt, both real debt and endebtedness to our families.
5. In many cases our cvs were better, but not in all by any means.
Where i was first year was heaviest academicalky. Most of us were already working on our dissertations by second year. Although the work load and exams felt first and final year heavy i think in reality it was spread in responsibilty. I always noticed those of us who made the better switch to self motivated research and study as the time progressed too, but i think thats covered by my earlier observations.
Some good points lir. I'd like to pass on Simon11's wise words which NPs might want to share with relatives going to study.I've also graduated this year studying Financial Computing and 1 week after my final exams started a full time job in my ideal position, Revenue Analyst in a Rail company.
There were too many students there for a good time, who didn't put any effort into thinking what they wish to do and left it all too late.
My keys for success are:
· A degree isn't worth much, it’s the work experience! I spent a year in the rail industry and without this I wouldn't have got my current job. Its worth having a year out or spend two summers on placements in your chosen careers.
· Volunteer, either outside of university or in social groups at uni.
· Part time job, vital to show that you have work ethics.
· Network, get to know some people in the industry, ask for work experience! Great for CV
· Start applying early for jobs! Come Final year, I was ready to apply for graduate jobs in September with the aim of having a job lined up for after exams. However many students finished their exams, THEN thought what should I do. That’s way too late...... It takes a few months from applying to a job, so worth starting ealier!
· Finally, think outside of the box. I applied for numerous graduate schemes however didn’t get a job, so instead looked at the regular full time jobs! Sometimes students believe the only way into a job is a graduate job.
*Update Jan 2012*
I'm now moving onto my third rail company as a Business Analyst Manager after 7 months in my first role after university. While the graduate schemes might seem good to progress your career, its perfectively possible to go down other channels! There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Tonight I went out, to visit a "group who do stuff". Too many people, too noisy, to speak to anybody except the nearest old dear ...... who seemed perfectly respectable .... could only afford one half, so after that was gone (made it stretch an hour) .... I had to leave0

Try cover4students.
You may find you have cover for students away from home on your own house insurance policy - but then you may want to decide if losing a laptop warrants you losing your NCD.
