I suspect that it is safer to pay his rent, although I agree with you in principle.
that is what my parents thought. give him enough money so he doesn't have to work in term time and can concentrate on academic studies.

if they had thought about it a bit more, they would have realised that i wasn't going to be doing a whole lot of work anyway, and forcing me to get a job would have actually eaten into the amount of time i could spend drinking myself into a coma.

it's a bit different in the second and third years where you actually do need to do some academic work, but in the first year when you are just dossing about it's probably a good thing to need to work.

This is what I meant when I said it would vary from person to person... and also why I said what I would "probably" do, meaning it's what I would like to be able to do if mine end up mature enough for that strategy at that age. ;) In any case, where I went, the first year had important exams at the end of it, and the 2nd year was the doss year.

My kids are some way off uni yet. DS will be 12 in October and DD will be 9 tomorrow. :)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

what will probably happen is that they will be mature enough to convince you that they are mature enough for that strategy, and then spend 5 evenings a week imbiding vodka through their eyeballs.

    p.s. i hope you're not suggesting that i was immature. outrageous. :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Lydia, i certainly noted that those of us who worked got more from our courses and the time.

    1. We understtod the actual monetary value of what we received
    2. We developed better time management skills ( imo a full time course is not fulltime, not in the way a full time job and being a parent or having a setious hobby is.

    3. We had regular reminders of why we were studying from mixing with our work colleagues ( depending on job)
    4. Vitally we left with less debt, both real debt and endebtedness to our families.
    5. In many cases our cvs were better, but not in all by any means.

Where i was first year was heaviest academicalky. Most of us were already working on our dissertations by second year. Although the work load and exams felt first and final year heavy i think in reality it was spread in responsibilty. I always noticed those of us who made the better switch to self motivated research and study as the time progressed too, but i think thats covered by my earlier observations.

I really see no benefit to anyone other than a borderline student, or say, a student carer in not hving some job, even if it is four hours a week to give a 'nursery' start to earning.

how do you use an arsenal season ticket when you are at uni in edinburgh? surely will cost at least £80/100 to get back on the train even with YP railcard and booking months in advance?

or is he just sitting on it so he doesn't have to go on a waiting list to get a season ticket again when he has finished uni?

If you have a huge allowance you can afford the train:D

I suspect that yours are already more mature than my DS :)

If yoirs is have as nice as either of lydias you have been very lucky. Incidentally, i have met five np children and was impressed by them all. Np might make great parents as rule? Thinking parents? Any way, dh and i agreed we think they are all wonderful. We generally like kids, but we like these ones especially.

I was also interested about the holiday thing. We are hoping to go on a supermarket trio to france when i have my passport, just for the day, but my newly single friend and her son are thinking of joining us, mainly she wants him to hear people speaking other languages in normal situations. and also, she wants a day in a new environment with adult. Its not quite a holiday, though we will do something fun while there.

Dh has met six NP children, the sixth being an adult, and he impressed dh mightily. Dh raves about lydias kids too, her son in particular impresses dh. I have been thinking about lydias daughter recently, and noted there was a circus 'school' in a town near lydia. I am not sure if they are just adults, or what format, but have mean meaning to mention it for some time. Its very active, but fun, and capitalises on what seems to be an innate skill.......just an idea.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it's a bit high. But he's expected to buy clothes and books out of that, plus his rail travel to/from uni.

Just bought a bag of salad stuff from a Tesco Express... I don't eat salad because I can't use a whole lettuce..... and those bags are darned expensive.... so I've bought a bag of what looks like green/red lettuce and "some other stuff".... not sure what .... and I've now got to get through the whole bloomin' lot before it goes off on the 5th.

So, that means I'll be making wraps, containing salady stuff + [1] egg/salad cream [2] cheese/salad cream [3] tuna/mayo/sweetcorn (a tin of this I found in Asda). It's got to be wraps as I bought a packet of those..... why on earth do I buy these stupid things then get stuck/forced into "eating it all before it goes off"?
